Damien Rice – Don't Explain Lyrics 17 years ago
i absolutely love this song. my girlfriend and i broke up, and then got back together, and i remember saying the same sort of things to her (though neither of us never cheated), so it just sorta brings back memories (sad though they be). i remember when we were broken up, though, i couldn't listen to this song because it was so heart-wrenching. amazing song though

oh my god, i absolutely love this song. first of all, i don't have that live version where he describes that, so that's really cool, i'll have to look for it. second, busking around europe is one of my biggest dreams, and that he could just write this song like that, when it's raining, on the street corner, ahh! what an amazing life

but this song has one of the greatest relationship lyrics of all time, and that is saying one hell of a lot. "i'll wait for you if you want me to, [but] am i just wasting my time?" if you just think about him on the street corner in the rain with that sad expression on his face thinking about this girl, god, it makes me want to give him a big hug haha

i know this is a sad song (and a beautiful one), but i can't say exactly what it all means. what i DO know is that there are a lot of christian references.

up on your wall smaller than small is a reference to (their relationship, but also) a cross or some jesus effigy that gets sort of pushed to the background (it is small). it's a common image for people (christians, obviously) who have lost their way or their faith

the wood wouldn't stain could then be how jesus is always there for them, his love wouldn't stain, even in the background (basically saying that someone loves her even though she doesn't even realize it, so these verses don't even have to be jesus)

if you're gonna be nailin me down i won't rise again obviously jesus and the cross, he dies and rises again; they're saying they won't

i'm not god, i'm not perfect, like humanantipathy said. i love you, but you can't expect me to be perfect

even with the abundance of christian references, this is still a fantastically beautiful song. i usually look the other way when people add christian references to songs, as long as they aren't preaching. and this certainly isn't a preachy song

Jimmy Eat World – The World You Love Lyrics 17 years ago
this song is pretty simple to understand. a guy and a girl are in a relationship, in which they've both been for a while, and now it's losing its love. the "i got a story it's almost finished" is their relationship, which is falling apart. he's wasting his time trying to figure out how to end it with her, so he's gotta do it soon, he knows. the chorus is him describing how they both know the love is lost.

as for the snippets of their relationship being the various verses, i could potentially see that in the last verse ("canals are freezing... you should just be here..."). but i think it could also just be him admitting that he isn't FULLY over her, and that he did actually love her at one point, and that a little part of him will always love her, even as they go their separate ways.
