Damien Rice – Dogs Lyrics 17 years ago
I used to always skip this song, but I’ve been listening to it a lot over the past few weeks. It’s actually a very very sweet song, and fills me with a lot of images. I think it’s about an innocent love that Damien feels for this girl. When he’s around her, he feels free and childlike. Think of the joy and freedom that’s behind the image “and the dogs they run in the good good morning sun” – dogs bounding down a hill on a beautiful day. This is the way the girl makes him feel.

I love the line – “and she gets splashed in paint and turns away and leaves me standing...” I can picture this girl, dressed in white, painting…she gets splashed and turns away, and Damien just stands there in childlike awe, watching her.

As for “and she gives I get without giving anything to me” I’ve thought of it as “and she gives, I get without giving anything, to me (the “to me” going with “and she gives (to me)”.

Unfortunately the girl has a boyfriend (“the wolf”), and he also takes from her without giving, but not in the same way. Damien is “receiving” from her innocently (like receiving joy) but I get the sense the boyfriend is taking advantage or not appreciating what he has.

I haven’t quite figured out who the man in the little house is…..I don’t think he’s referring to himself.
