I hate to disagree but I don't think this song is about complaints. It struck me much differently. The boy (presumable composed of sugar, milk, and molasses) is the gazer, the attraction- a wonderful, sweet human being, but the last line 'it takes a little vanity to know what it means' suggests that the boy does not know what it means and that he is not aware of who he is. The pre-chorus reveals that the narrator is familiar with him and that she knows that something is wrong though he denies it. It struck as him having depression perhaps... Or at least that he is holding in things and not seeing himself for what he is and that he dances around the subject by never giving her questions answers. But even though she hopes he wil start to feel better there is a cold moon rising. Especially because she refers to him as 'Darkness'... it suggests that he has a 'dark' side about him. In the second verse as well, it seems to allude to him trying to escape his problems or his life by running fast. But- because he could run fast, he is still acknowledging their presence and the fact that they could do something about it... But he just hasn't got the energy to carry on. It becomes obvious that the girl is in love with this shadow of a boy, but he is blind to her love. She wants him to see her and realize her or to at the very least feel or hope for somethign better than what there is at that moment in time. |

| The chorus also sort of tells that love was very subjective. A lot of it suggests that the girl was pretty and desirable, but the chorus also says that she is far from perfect. Maybe she has wronged him or she has some flaw- but regardless, he is stuck on her. | |

I do believe that the sort of affection described in this song is more pure than what has been suggested. What I think he describes in having been in love with someone and now regretting and hating that the relationship has ending. As far as hiding in the shadows, he is trying to escape the memory of her because she was an angel and he wishes that he had not given her away. The lurker who lusts after blood and love is just someone that he seems to want to protect her from and through this he is stating (in a sort of extended metaphor fashion) that he is better for her than many others could be and that his sort of love is more pure. The bridge seems to state this feeling of how she always meant so much and that she never quite loved him the same way. And how he is now struggling with himself in wanting her but also in wanting to get over her. And so he has this sort of disease and infection of her. And, really: It's the Hush Sound. Nobody's going to get raped in a Hush Sound song. |
