Rush – Faithless Lyrics 13 years ago
I see all these comments, arguing about God and Christianity. Could it be that it isn't about either? But its not about Hinduism or Islam either. What would happen if people took what they wanted from ALL the religions (I've got my moral compass) and left out all the hate, all the begging for money, the lies to get more followers. I will resist your sermons and forces that you would use against me. But I will do good to everyone. Like the flower in the desert that only blooms at night, I will quietly resist, but you won't know cause you will only see me full of love and hope...

Rush – Armor and Sword Lyrics 13 years ago
This song was discussed in a paper posted online Rush. There is a belief that for every evil/wrong(i.e. war, genocide, conflict) done unto the world, children are born with another cut. This song follows along with Far Cry in that what we do in our lifetime we pass down to generations to come. Shielding them from our mistakes will cause them to make hte same mistakes, but passing on our beliefs will cause them to make the same mistakes.

Foo Fighters – Walk Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this song is about coming out of a divorce: the first verse is about losing the communication, the first chorus is about trying to get the relationship back. The second verse is about remembering all the things they've been through, all the "little conquerors" that built up to the end. BTW: paper mountains, debts piling up, then watching as they burn you. Then its a matter of learning how to go thru the dating process again, never giving up on "good old fashioned romance". Convincing yourself that you're over him/her. Where do you look? I can still have fun. I'm not too old. I'm not just going to sit back and die alone. I've waited long enough, I'm over her/him...where do I begin?

What is this song were about a parent facing their child's mortality. I.e. some accident, and having to decide whether to "pull the plug" or not. Your heart's never been broken, your pride (in the child) has never been stolen. But on the other hand, there's lots of kids that die that haven't accomplished as much.. The argument that nobody wants to face. I never realized the differing points of view until I read your post, and I totally agree with your perspective, thank you for the enlightenment. But maybe it can be a bit more mundane (although very much the same) as a fight with the grim reaper.

Dio – Rainbow In The Dark Lyrics 14 years ago
In Albuquerque, just before he did his show touring for, "Holy Diver". Ronnie was asked what this song was about in a radio interview. He was amazed that people really liked it as he wrote most of it in 45 minutes at a Denver football game. Late int he game the home team was down, it was a cloudy dark miserable day. Then the running back scored a touchdown, the extra point was good, the onside kick worked out, they scored another touchdown. The whole game just came together for them. And the world didn't seem quite so dark and gloomy. Like finding a rainbow....

So did they win?

No they lost horribly like 42 to 13 or something like that....

Its been years so I'm paraphrasing here, but you get the basic idea.

After reading what others have written, I believe he went back and edited what he had written down, maybe putting other connotations to it, but the football game was what he claims was the inspiration for it. I do believe the Blackmoor/Rainbow breakup could be a real possibility for him to write it up more than he originally started with.

Dio – All The Fools Sailed Away Lyrics 14 years ago
I wonder if its so philosophical at all. "Rainbow in the Dark the Dark" was about a football game after all. Has anyone considered that this song might be about erotic dancers? "we bring you beautiful...we teach you sin." "We are your one great chance for a miracle or we will disappear never to be seen again." They tend to travel around until they find a life in a place they want to stay in. Usually after meeting someone...

LOL, "they take your diamonds and then give you steel" almost too perverse for words...

The thing that makes me consider this as a possible meaning is the song title, how does that fit into the religious perspective. "and all the fools sailed away". Could the fools be the ones chasing after a dancer? Or are the fools the ones that thought them to be too dishonest/sinful/shameful to chase after? thereby losing their chance at a miracle, a girl they could never get anywhere else?

Līve – Lightning Crashes Lyrics 17 years ago
I was shocked to hear from my sister years ago that this song albeit about the circle of life, is also about an abortion (whether intentional or to save the mother not isn't made clear). The placenta falls to the floor, it isn't dropped, its thrown away, discarded. This thought sends chills down my spine to this day.

The new mother and old mother refer to the young girl throwing away a new life and the old mother giving life that shouldn't have been possible. The abortion seemingly making the birth possible. The angle that closes her eyes does so in disgust of the younger mother throwing away the babies life.

Before the doctor can even close the door is a comment about someone observing the abortion happen before the doctor closes the door on him, regarding this song is an observation made by an intern or maintenance worker at a hospital.

As disturbing as this meaning is, the song is done so beautifully that it glosses over the first verse that people don't want to realize anyway.
I'm sorry if this meaning doesn't fit people's beliefs, but isn't it the meaning of art to expose people to the truth of what really happens in the world?

Tool – Prison Sex Lyrics 17 years ago
this song is definately about sexual abuse. The victim grows up and becomes the abuser. Having been taught that the abuse they went thru as a child is how a loving parent/child relationship is supposed to be. They continue that "loving" relationship with their own children, hence the line "I need you to feel this."
the prison is the family. to say anything will break up the family, or the prison can be the circle of abuse that can't be broken.
I don't necessarily think that Maynard had to be a victim of abuse to write this song as other songs of his take on a first person introspective but it is none the less a very well written awesome powerful song about a sad truth that is disturbing to look at

Rush – Jacob's Ladder Lyrics 17 years ago
Rush's metaphors can have all sorts of meanings.
Not sure if anyone missed the snare drums rolling a marching cadence at the beginning, kind of sets me to think of this as being about the military.
The dark sullen storm clouds could be nations at war, brooding because they have no easy way to win. Suddenly the clouds are parted and the war is won by a bright new technology that causes death to the enemy: atomic bombs split clouds with their light. The shining shaft of weave the death of their dreams.
I'm not saying anyone's interpretation is wrong.
The dark sullen storm clouds could be a more pesonal war in a person's head with drug abuse causing the conflict. The shining beams could be a revelation: finding God or something to get them out of the drug abuse.

Rush – Faithless Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree with raggamuffin.
I think they say it plain that "the guiding star beats the spirit in the sky" -- they believe in the teaching of Jesus Christ, but not of the spiritual higher-than-thous of the world or the "fools and thieves well disquised in the temples".
As far as your question of quietly resisting: the metaphors before that line explain the resistance from within, not from without. My understanding of this song fits me because of the way I can sit in church, and listen to the interpetations of JC's teachings and not believe that the minister or anyone else there is holier than me, Thats where the resistance is, not martyring the speaker for the beliefs.
I don't believe like previous generations that God is a God of venegence and brutality, but a God of hope and love.
