| Manchester Orchestra – The River Lyrics | 15 years ago |

i couldn't agree more. my best friend just showed me this song, and i understand why he loves it so much. so sad but so true for so many people. they want God to save them, but yet they are so quick to turn their backs on Him when He doesn't show up exactly in the way they want or expect Him to. |

everything about this song is perfect. and i don't think i've ever (fully) understood what a song like this (really) means, at least in my life, until now. therefore, very few songs are as close to my heart as this one is. |

| Defeater – Prophet In Plain Clothes Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| does anyone else think that the dude singing the acoustic part of the song sounds anything like (or is at least attempting to sound similar to) connor oberst (bright eyes)? the way he does his vocal inflections and everything; it completely reminds me of the way he sings. i love this part of the song, but every time i hear it i can't help but feel like he's trying to imitate bright eyes. | |

| Wolf Parade – Dear Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| personal interpretations are nice, but it's always the best to go back to what the artist originally said, if possible. and, lucky for us, with this song it is. i'm not going to post the link because it has been done quite a few times, but the bottom line is that bagleemo is right. it is about that Buddhist legend story. it's interesting, and in my opinion, spot-on with our current culture today (or, as Spencer says, "my generation"). consumers: always hungry; never able to be satisfied. sad truth. | |

| this is so creepy and incredible at the same time. | |
| mewithoutYou – Nice and Blue Lyrics | 17 years ago |

He doens't mean "all things left are emptiness" in the way that emptiness is a bad thing. He means it in the way that everything is empty, meaningless, or nothing compared to his relationship with God. He could even be alluding to scritpure in that. For instance, in Ecclesiates, when Solomon cries out "everything is meaningless!" and later goes on to conclude that the only thing meaningful in life is to love the Lord and fear Him alone (make Him your reason for living, since that's what we were created for, anyway). Another verse that comes to mind nearly every time I hear this song is Philippians 3:7-9 - "But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus myLord. For His sake I have suffered that loss of all thins and counted them as rubbish, in order than I may gain Christ and be found in Him..." There comes a time in every believer's life when they realize that they have been holding something in their heart before God, and are miserable because of it. God asks us to surrender those things to Him because He loves us and knows what's best for us, even if it hurts or doesn't make sense at the time. A lot of Aaron's lyrics allude to this concept in many mwY songs. This one does with such beauty and power it's ridiculous. |

| Bishop Allen – Butterfly Nets Lyrics | 17 years ago |

what are the other songs you put on the cd, may i ask? i am always curious and fascinated by mix cd's that people make for each other... for certain reasons, whatever they are... they just mean so much more knowing that it was a purposefully, carefully and thoughtfully crafted mix of specific songs for a specific person for a specific reason. and that fact alone makes the songs have more meaning. |

its a lot easier to depict the meanings to the lyrics of songs if you know the guy's personal beliefs who wrote the song. take aaron weiss (mewithoutyou), andy hull (manchester orchestra) and matt theissen (relient k) for examples. you want to know what some of the ambiguous could-go-either-way-about-God lyrics mean? they are all professed Christians. look at it from that perspective, and it makes much more sense. not to mention incredible and profound. while gross bands like creed and evenanescene can also be seemingly talking about God, and played on freaking Christian radio stations, and they aren't Christians at all. the dude from creed was all about buddhist monks, and amy whatsherface laughed that they were being sold in Christian bookstores. so, just as a general statement... it often helps to know. |

| Relient K – Five Iron Frenzy Is Either Dead or Dying Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
i do agree that matt thiessen has become a better lyricist throughout the years, but if you're saying relient k "used to suck" and only now are good, you're quite mistaken. sure, they've matured lyrically and musically - what band doesn't, for the most part? but just look at anatomy of tounge and cheek, even songs like "softer to me" and "charles in charge" - they still write very similarly now: witty banter and sarcasm mixed in with deep spiritual meaning and statements about life. not to mention that many of their songs (EVEN off of five score, though people try to say RK doesn't love God anymore) are straight-up worship. this song in particular is simply a silly tribute to Five Iron, who was extrememly popular right around the time Relient K started as a band, and they ended up becoming close friends. the RK boys even played Five Iron's last show in Denver, CO. this song was meant to be stupid, and pointless, while still talking about five iron in the most random and humorous ways possibly. i think we can safely say they succeeded. |
