| I'm reading all these comments and they make me laugh because I've never seen this song as a crush/onesided love song. This is my wedding song. Lol This song means so much to my husband and I because we were best friends who fell for each other right around the time this song came out. We would be in a room filled with our friends but suddenly all we could see was each other. Just "'you and me' and all of the people..." We were also big into Smallville and this song was featured on a prom episode (I think) and we made such a big deal about it. It took us a while to walk down the aisle but we decide all the way back in 2004/5 that this is/will always be our song and we stuck to it. | |

I got this album in the early 90s when I was little and this song resonated with me more than any to this day. My mom left my brother and I in the 80s and she made so many promises to us that she never fulfilled. We waited for her to be a mom and when she was finally ready to play her role we were young adults who didn't need her. These words always made me cry when I was little and waiting... "If not now then when If now today then Why make your promises" But by my late teen, these words had much more meaning... "A love declared for days to come Is as good as none" ...her promises were pointless and served no other purpose but to break her children's hearts, and over time harden them against her. And as an adult, this is where I am at... "You can wait and lose this heart You can wait and soon be sorry " Actually, I always thought the line was "You can wait and you'll be sorry" She says she is sorry but it's way past time for me to care. "We all must live our lives Always feeling Always thinking The moment has arrived" I was fortunate to have a lot of wonderful women: aunts, teachers, friends, a stepmom that stepped in to be substitute moms for me when I needed one. I have my "moments" with them, I am loved and haven't missed out...my birth giver is the one that missed out. This song still makes me cry but it's more of the nostalgic feeling that is attached to the song for me. I will always love Tracy Chapman for this song. |

my fave sade song ever. to me this song is about a depressed person who feels like the weight of the world is on her shoulders or that life has been unfair to her. she has all these responsibilities. she wants to make everyone happy (want to cook you a soup that warms the soul) but she feels like nothing she does is good enough (nothing will change at all) the private war to me is a war within herself bw what she wants for herself and the responsibilities she has. she has a plan for her future and deep down she wants to leave and shed herself of her responsibilities (i suppose i could just walk away/ will i disappoint my future if i stay ) she is not happy with her present situation and leaving is the answer but she is stilled filled with doubts or insecurities. the line that touches me the most is (i'm crying everyone's tears/ i have already paid for all my future sins) her she feels like she has done so much and life has been so hard, wondering when she will get a break? when will life get easy? she thinks she has paid her dues and wants a better future. i love this song cuz it's so relate-able . |

i like ur explanation best. i think u hit the nail on the head with all the sexual references having double meanings of sex acts and worshiping or idolizing. she is trying to hold on to a man by using sex even tho he has said that its not what he needs. but i think that its something special in the fact that they are both singing the same words in the chorus from different standpoints. to me it indicates that they both know this isnt working but neither of them is making a move to end it. |

this song has so many different meanings but at the core of it i think its about life as an individual. each of us want to be more than what we came on this planet being. we came with nothing and even tho we leave with nothing we still want to leave our mark behind. we all want to be in control, we all want to rule the world that revolves around us and not necessarily the globe. i want to rule my world as tiny as it may be. the ironic thing is that even tho we may seek to do so by designing things our way etc things in life rarely ever go as plan. and as the song says nothing last forever. instead of trying to control everything we should be enjoying all that have, the people around us, our beautiful planet. its cool to sit back and just contemplate what this awesomely timeless songs really mean. with the exception of the homosexuality meanings i can see some credibility in most explanations i've read here. |

one of my faves from goo goo dolls. i think it ties with naked for 1st place. i always thought he was thinking about or talking about a girl. a girl who he used to know or grew up with when life was hard and no one really cared about them. back when they had big dreams of being somebody. life moved on and things didnt turn out the way she wanted it too. i don't think she accomplished her dreams of being a star i think life got in the way. which is why he says "don't it make u sad to know that life is more than who we are?" i dont think scars as he mentions are necessarily a physical thing but it could be memories of a painful past or the dreams u once had but cant achieve. the things that haunt us or trap us in the life that we are not happy with. i think he thinks he is the one person that sees the real person she is, the one person who knows her and won't hurt her and anytime time she wants to escape her world she can come to him. she can't runaway from who she is or the reality she lives in but he can be a comfort to her even if its for a short time. its a beautiful song, sad and almost depressing. but i love it. |

the only song i heard during twilight new moon that had me saying who is that? i did a lot of searching to find this song. i like the flow of melody. it just sounds so pretty and i like the tribal parts too. wish the site had the tribal lyrics or someone could provide a translation. i think the song is about a person acknowledging his or her imperfections,or flaws and wanting someone they love to fill in all the gaps, love them them despite those flaws.be a savior in a way. and in that regard it fits in the story of new moon perfectly. in the scene where this song is played bella comes to jacob with bikes that are as damaged as her heart and in the process of fixing her bikes he helps her mend some of the damage caused by edward leaving. |

i think many of us can idenitfy with this. its about leaving someone u're very attracted to and fighting hard against all those feeling u have about this person. leaving someone who knows u're into them and doesnt think u're strong enough to leave or just plain doesnt want u to leave. confused feelings about someone u love or used to love. the turning point in many rel'ps. i was 12 when this song came out and reality bytes came out. i didnt love the movie half as much as this song even tho i hadn't been in love yet. it is still one of my favorite songs of all time. |

i'm listening to assassin right now and the music alone has given me goosebumps, then u add in john's voice and the lyrics...magic. i think its my fave on battle studies. i think its about a girl he had no intention of getting serious about, he thought he was playing her to get what he wanted and then be done with her, but things didnt work out that way. he either fell for her or she played him. mr mayer has a lovely way with words, cuz i figure a guy like that should be utterly repulsive but he has the opposite effect. |

from what i've heard about him long before this song came out is that john is an avid pot smoker. so for him this is very real. and even tho u and i may not partake in such vices it is very real for alot of ppl. there are millions who will identify with song. i identify with it. take out the weed and replace it with any of ur vices that may be taboo and u can identify. this is a very real top notch song, and no less than what is expected from mr. mayer. who says i cant be free from all of the things i used to be, rewrite my history: who says i cant be free to be who i want to be and do what i want to do...even if that is to get stoned! |

the lyrics are about bella. i didnt get the song until i read the lyrics while listening to it. it's almost like bella is looking in the mirror and questioning herself about her feelings for edward and who is or how she has changed since meeting him. myaimistruex3 i agree with ur interpretation. i saw the religious/biblical connotations in the song. golden could have a double meaning in this case as alot of ppl have pointed out with the use of the word karat in the 2nd line. but i always thought that the line referred to doing on to others as u want done to u. i think the song is about them or who ever wrote it in the band. its about realising that fame and riches are not all what u expect it to be and it can turn u into someone u dont like. its about them not being happy with who they have become but continuing to do what they do anyway. "and I saw god cry in the reflection of my enemies" maybe this line means that god is feeling sorry for all the ppl he has hurt which include "the lovers with no time for me" i think the person is so down on himself that he thinks that not even god is on his side at this point. "Tongues on the sockets of electric dreams" someone said it earlier and i agree i think this refers to a suicide attempt. this song is full of double meanings tho. sockets could simply mean his eyes and since tears are mentioned in the next line. tongues could also refer to ppl talking about them. so in essence that verse could mean that the things ppl say about him and his shitty childhood are things that are hurtful and make him cry. its my 2nd fave song on the album. it is a really deep song and so insightful. it can apply to anyone who is highly ambitious, not just to be famous but in any field. getting what u want doesnt always make u happy. |

this is my favorite heart song. i was a lil girl when it came out and i hadnt heard it in a long time. a few days ago i heard it again and i got goose bumps. i love heart, those girls are awesome musicians. i think this song is about a guy who is reluctant to get into a rel'p but the girl is very into him. and she is trying to convince him that they are good together. "We can't go on Just running away If we stay any longer We will surely never get away" to me it also seems like she is saying its futile to keep running away cuz they will end up together. this song is perfect for any couple who arent sure if they should be together cuz other ppl dont like them together. i see this song in 2 ways. i agree with above posters who think that this song discribes the average individual trying to find whatever it takes to make them happy...trusting in all these things but never finding it. and the some just get away meaning some ppl either give up or never bother with going thru all that crap. the other way i see this song is: each thing discribes a different person or type of person. that for each person it takes something different or particular to make him or her happy. so some ppl need violence, some need fear, some need love, some need god etc. and the some just get away line refers to ppl dont need/ bother with any of these things and are happy anyway. i take that line to mean that those ppl are somehow luckier than the rest. i could be wrong but that's my perception. |
