Trading Yesterday – Shattered Lyrics 5 years ago
Speaking to the "is this song religious" comments ...

"And his love will conquer all"

Those familiar with the Bible will definitely see the ties between this and many scriptures where it talks about God. It definitely reads like a song that is talking about someone's final breath as he leaves the worldly life, concerns and history ... passes the graves of others who have died ... and is on his way to the "place we belong." The song fully encompasses the final feelings of a person leaving all the things behind he loves but going into the sunlight of eternity with God.

That said, it doesn't mean you can't enjoy this without being a Christian ... though it'd be hard to appreciate it without a belief in some afterlife that we are all on the road to, in my opinion.

Manchester Orchestra – I Can Feel a Hot One Lyrics 16 years ago
I think you might be really close.

I look at it slightly different ..... "Manna is a hell of a drug" - He's a religious man so but he's, nonetheless, worried about the upcoming baby. He's trying to rely on God (Manna = gift from God) but he knows, deep down, what his heart wants most (the baby to not come) is not something he should be asking from God ..... so no matter how much he prays, etc .... it's not enough.

One point .... I think this line...
"And my teeth ripping out of my head"
..... is how he can't stop smiling after seeing his newly born daughter :D

"To pray for what I thought were angels
Ended up being ambulances
And the Lord showed me dreams of my daughter
She was crying inside your stomach"

What he was praying for was for the baby not to come .... for some other way to present itself. The "angels" he was hoping to come help him out of the predicament were really the Ambulances that drove him and his wife to the Hospital and the answer to all his prayers about not having a baby ...... was the baby.

"and I felt love, Again"

Very important .... he hadn't "felt Love" for the whole pregnancy since he'd been so pre-occupied but not that his prayers have been answered in the way he least expected, he feels love, again.

Makes sense when you put Andy's background into the equation.

GREAT song!

O.A.R. – Heard the World Lyrics 17 years ago
Great song. Heard a clip from Amazon and downloaded .... didn't even recognize the beginning of the song and thought I had been sent the wrong MP3. Finally just listened to the whole thing and, yeah, one of my favorite songs right now.

As for the meaning, it reminds me of "The World I Know" by Collective Soul.

So I walk up on high
And I step to the edge
To see my world below.
And I laugh at myself
As the tears roll down.
'Cause it's the world I know.
It's the world I know.

The World is falling down and it's tempting sometimes to just cash in the chips and walk away but there's always that one person who "just want[s] me to stay here so I'm just going to stay." Always that person or realization who we keep pushing on for.

Shinedown – Burning Bright Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree with the people who think it's about finding yourself.

It makes a lot of sense if you picture him as a goth high school kid who is starting to come of age.

The irony of many goths is that they become one because their friends start doing it......which is almost exactly what goths are supposedly be against. Doing things just because everyone else is doing it (at least I would say 50% of my goth friends only became one when their friends did....not to say that all goths are just putting up some front....just that some are definitely followers)

"The more the light shines through me
I pretend to close my eyes
The more the dark consumes me
I pretend I'm burning, burning bright"

When the light (or, as I think, things that should be considered normal or nice things in life) shines through me, he pretends to close his eyes. Notice, he's not totally closing his eyes...he's pretending to. He really wants to partake in what's happening but he feels he's not allowed or needs to give the appearance that he isn't.

The more the dark (the depressing things or unnatural things that he feels he is supposed to gravitate toward) consumes me, he pretends he's burning bright.....or reveling in it.

I imagine that this sensation of discovering that what you really want to be is contradictory to what you've consumed your life with is very common in many young adults who have fallen into any type of clique. Only to later found out that they weren't really into that.

Please note, I'm not saying that all Goths only like depressing and dark topics. There is definitely a common trend in that particular type of groups that gravitates toward that. The essence of the lyrics could really be applied to anyone who is pretending to be someone they're not and are just starting to realize that.
