Sufjan Stevens – For the Widows in Paradise, for the Fatherless in Ypsilanti Lyrics 16 years ago
First of all, LOL at all of the tools that are trying to school everyone without using proper grammar, spelling, or any other intention of convincing the rest of us that you are at all educated.

Second, I'm sure that we all read the excerpt explaining that the song was named because of the single women in Paradise at the soccer game, etc. etc. But my dearest Stranded tried telling us that we are illiterate and that there is no possible way that it could be about religion; based on what? The excerpt? Because I can read just fine, it it clearly does NOT say that it is NOT about Jesus. While none of us will ever really know what the song is about unless we have a one on one with Suf himself, it's absurd that anyone would try ruling out the religious undertones for any of his songs.

While he does not say that it is NOT religious, he DOES say, COUNTLESS times in SEVERAL interviews that his relationship with Christ is like a marriage. He loves God as his lover and when someone is in that intimate of a relationship with anyone or anything, it can be enveloping. So it's almost crazy to think that God wouldn't be the undertone of everything that one writes when they are constantly living in the shadows of their beliefs.

And anyhow, who cares who is a christian and who isn't, all that matters is that despite the fact that Sufjan is, he isn't like all the other Contemporary Christian Music douche bags.

Sufjan Stevens – Romulus Lyrics 16 years ago
it's interesting that the only thing that sufjan speaks to admiring about his mother in the song, her hair, is the one thing that he chooses to mention that changes. It may or may not be referring to the changes in his perception towards her, but I definitely think it is a sign of vanity - that despite the death of her father, she sits in front of a mirror and works on her appearance.
it's all so interesting and beautiful and cleverly portrayed.

Sufjan Stevens – Sister Lyrics 17 years ago
Question: the building up of the instrumentals and then a sudden crash and into a soft, swaying sound, does that remind anyone of anything?
anyone? anyone?
;) it's the crashing of waves my friends..the water rolls out and rolls in with a crash, clash, and then sway. It sounds awfully parallel to his song.
As for the lyrics, yes, it seems there is some reminiscence of his childhood, and how it went quickly, however there isn't much of a sense of a regret, or anger...haven't you ever thought about sweet memories and just missed them..just been sad about them, not because they were necessarily upsetting, but because they have passed?
As for the fishstone, it could be anything, could be a fish shaped stone that he saw, could be coral as someone mentioned, but it's not surprising that it was burning him!
I can recall countless times that i've been out at the beach or by my pool or on the dock where i was propped up supporting my upper body by my elbows and leaning my head on my hands and just dreamed in the sun about memories and life..the sun makes things hot and when you lean on hot things, it burns.

Sufjan Stevens – Vito's Ordination Song Lyrics 17 years ago
LOL it's not about The Godfather, that's an awful, and awfully ignorant, interpretation. This is a song written for a PCA presbyterian pastor, named Vito, in Brooklyn, NY. There's nothing to interpret..this title tells it all. Besides it's a personalized song for his friend, who are we to try and figure it out anyhow?
