This might (must) be wrong, but still, this is what I hear when I listen to the song. Cecilia is a single mother, Amanda is her daughter. Amanda's father doesn't care for them, maybe even abuses them, but maybe he's just dead. Or gone for a walk? Anyways, they strugle to get through this situation really bad...And the "dancer" pretty much sounds like a stripper. The narrator is a friend of her, but he doesn't do anything to help. |

Many people saw Elliott as mister misery, which pissed him off. At first I thought this song is about how people only like him when he's the depressed, sensitive guy, and not even thinking that he is as happy as anyone else. He mentioned that in interviews a lot. But now it sound more like a relationship between two people. At this point I agree with Kingston. |
