I knew a girl in highschool who was like the character Luka (which is a differant form of the name "Luke" in some European countries.) To me all the lyrics ring true because that was exactly what she was like. So this has a personal meaning for me. |

I have an idea about the second verse. If only drowning men can see Jesus, and sailors are obviously likely to drown, then he said "all men will be sailors then until the sea shall free them" because he wants all men to see him, and the only way they can do that is by drowning (i.e. being "Free" from this life.) Also, he wants them to be like him, and he "was a sailor when he walked upon the water". |

Parts of this song are about a love that is joyful but painful at the same time. He wants to end it but he can't stand to. To me the referances to faith are about having faith that the relationship will turn out all right in the end. |

"But you see that line there moving through the station?
I told you I told you I told you I was one of those"
Clearly this is a referance to the past, just like the time when he "used to live for music", before he was a revolutionary. He was just one of those people who does ordinary things like walking through crowds and going to work on the train. Then he discovered the truth about the corruption of the system, Which reminds me, it is "I don't like what happened to my system" on the "I'm Your Man" album. |
