I've always wondered about the meaning of the line "And when I told her that I'd never, she softly whispered 'that's all right.'" Does he mean that he never had, or that he never would? If the former, then I agree with sapphireskies and Trez1313. If the latter, it becomes much more of a dark, disturbing tale -- basically female-dominant rape. |

To me, it seems like an (over?)protective dad worrying about his daughter. Examples include the beer reference, "Lolita" (which is a classic story about an old man and a 12-year-old having sex... multiple times), "talk to a stranger", and that he doesn't think it's a joke or a game. |

The last stanza refers to the '80s singer Joe Jackson, who was often compared to Elvis Costello. Needless to say, pretty much the entire song is fictional, and Joe Jackson has nothing to do with Shoeless Joe (who, IMO, deserves a spot in the Hall of Fame. He's not eligible because he's banned, as Code Monkey noted.) |
