I think this song is about how we take ordinary people, put them in extraordinary circumstances, and then expect them to act rationally, and how these ordinary people feel when they do things that, under any other circumstances, they would not have done. I remember when the Abu Ghraib incidents came to light, and how everyone was denouncing the soldiers' acts, saying "what kind of horrible people could do something like that?" and so on. It's easy to see how wrong something is when your sitting behind your computer, or watching TV. But when your life is threatened on a daily basis, you can rationalize even the craziest ideas. I am definitely not condoning these acts, but I know that people are fallible and soldiers are just ordinary people. |
