I think what Iggy said makes the most sense.
"I don't think this song is about catholics being drunks. I think it has more to do with the fact that most people drink and believe in God for solace. They want to believe that there is something that can save them. Religion is a forced addiction - like alcohol - people keep on going back, week after week, hoping to finally find that something to set them free."
