First time I heard this song with the line "yours was kitchen clean" I knew it refered to Owsley. His acid was indeed considered the best you could get at the time.
The line "just by chance you crossed the diamond with the pearl, you turned it on the world" could refer to an incident that took place in San Francisco back in the 60's: Haight-Ashburys Pink Wedge incident happened on November 11, 1967, when a batch of LSD shaped like pink wedges, and adulterated with another LSD-like drug, STP, hit the San Francisco market.
"you crossed the [LS]Diamond with the [ST]Pearl...
From Wikipedia: "In the summer of '67...Owsley and Scully made trial batches of 10mg tablets and then STP mixed with LSD in a few hundred yellow tablets but soon ceased production of STP." |

I always took this song the way SRV Blues says above except: the girl is planning to get married.."your everlasting summer you can see it fading fast so you grab a piece of something that you think is going to last..you wouldn't know a diamond if you held it in your hand"... Guess many guys have known a girl who marries because she feels she's gettin' old..
The line "..you been tell me you're a genius..I don't know what you mean.." is wonderful!
And the guitar playing! I used to think I could play a little but when I heard this I gave up. How're you ever gonna get this good? |

I agree with sydnemarc, to me it sounds like Rikki is a guy newly discovering he is gay. The spelling of the name could be to obfuscate the meaning of the song. "Our little wild time", "you kind of scared yourself", "you tell yourself you're not my kind", "you could have a change of heart" all seem to fit with this meaning, IMO. |
