Fountains of Wayne – All Kinds Of Time Lyrics 16 years ago
No, in an interview they said it was about a replay of a football game. That's what the song's about-- but you can still interpret it however you want.

Fountains of Wayne – Strapped for Cash Lyrics 16 years ago
The epitome of FoW:

So I headed out west to invest in the races
All the goddamn horses kept falling on their faces

This is such a great verse, and perfectly describes how silly their songs are. Pure comedy.

Fountains of Wayne – Troubled Times Lyrics 16 years ago
Guys, it's FoW-- don't read too much into the lyrics.

The song is so obviously about a guy who is into a girl that probably doesn't even know he's alive, and how he lives this fantasy that someday it'll turn out she feels the same way about him. The "moral" of the song is essentially "don't give up". The lyrics indicate that if he gives up, this fantasy can never become reality. So why bother trying? Well, because you never know! You never will know with another person if you don't try.

Fountains of Wayne – Bright Future In Sales Lyrics 16 years ago
The point of the song is this:

He, the story writer, doesn't want to end up as another person living the "American dream" of having a pointless job where the only escape is alcohol. Getting "promoted" to sales is basically a dead-end job, and is often the butt of a lot of jokes. The story writer wants to avoid this fate, so he's going to "get his s--- together" and do something with his life.

Look, it's about a football play. Don't try to twist the words into some kind of meaning-- like most FoW songs there isn't that deep of a meaning to it. These songs are meant to be enjoyed, not picked apart and analyzed.

Pavement – Spit On A Stranger Lyrics 17 years ago
It sounds to me like it's about a guy who hung around a girl, and now after it ended he realizes she was kind of stupid, and he was too good for her while she thinks she was too good for him

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Dam Would Break Lyrics 17 years ago
Great bass line in this song. Anyways, the lyrics would seem to indicate that the "storyteller" is gradually growing farther away from God.

"And if my lips could only speak the name // the dam would break"

and

"If my mind could only loose the chain // the dam would break"

say to me that once he falls into a Godless life he would "flood" into a world of sin.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Little Man, Big Man Lyrics 17 years ago
The references to powerful weapons:

"It's all in the damage our toys can do"

and the line:

"It's all in the violence of the games we play"

..indicate to me that this is a song about mankind moving forward in many aspects while still failing to advance in other trains of thought.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Pray Your Gods Lyrics 17 years ago
The lyrics to this song seem pretty obvious to me. While I've never been able to tell if Toad was a Christian band (most label them as "folk rock") this song almost certainly is talking about Christianity.

First verse: relating to the sacrifice of Jesus-- don't understand all the details.
First chorus: saying you can pray to (false) Gods or you can follow Jesus and believe in "love"

second verse: about the life of Jesus and how even though he performed miracles people still didn't believe him, leading to his eventual demise.
second chorus: same meaning as first chorus, different words

The whole song is kind of asking why people would practice painful and violent things when all they need to do is follow Jesus' word and love each other.
