Damien Rice – 9 Crimes Lyrics 15 years ago
God I love this song... Probably one of the best songs i've heard on cheating... It's just so raw and unnerving.
The first verse implies that the offending partner is disgusted with himself for cheating, hence "leave me out with the waste." He associates cheating with immorality and thus, waste. He clearly has a moral code, and is all too aware of his disregard for it-- of his fall from grace. What's worse is that by cheating and thinking of his faithful partner in that "wrong kind of place," he defiles her as well.
Hence, "give my gun away while it's loaded" metaphorically relates the heart to a weapon capable of hurting many rather than being purely a tool of one's biological life force/destruction. Unable to truly love both women, his heart becomes a loaded gun.

Gavin DeGraw – Dancin' Shoes Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm hung up on the symbolic value of the dancing shoes too. I agree with the above commenters who argue that the man isn't just some short-lived hobby to pick up and drop at the girl's leisure-- a pair of dancin' shoes. He wants the whole picture, but she only takes him for test drives-- dances for a song or two, then takes the shoes off. I think there is a definite play on the phrase "walked all over." He doesn't want to be exhausted by the dance of their relationship if that's all it is-- ephemeral, for her enjoyment, and disingenuous.

The Rolling Stones – Under My Thumb Lyrics 17 years ago
I find it kind of remarkable that it hasn't really occurred to anyone that this song could be interpreted as being about S&M play. Regardless of gender politics, it's very much about psychological control. First, the man is the controlled one. Then the table turns-- a metaphorical "switch"-- and the woman is under his "thumb" or sexual control. It's Master and slave. It's Domination/submission. And it's a mentality.
The word "pet" is often used as a sort of lusted after honorific. Though degrading, it is perceived as a great honor to serve another.
There. I said it.
Open your eyes.

Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
I feel like everyone is wasting all this time debating over whether or not JEFF BUCKLEY is better than Rufus or Leonard. The truth of the matter is that Leonard Cohen wrote those beautiful lyrics. He was the one who gave birth to this song, and for that we should all be grateful. Buckley did make it his own, but only AFTER hearing, and being inspired by Cohen's initial work. Whether or not it's better or not, well, that's your opinion.
But in the very least, just remember that Cohen was the creator.
