| It came to me while I was humming the chorus in she shower: "Ain't no guarding my high" Duh, this song is about being high. I suppose on drugs, since a lot of the other lyrics seem to refer to drugs. I get the sense that the author has the feeling of floating in the air, and everything is so beautiful in his state of mind that there's gold even on the ceiling. He knows his high won't last forever, and that people he has to deal with will steal his great happy feelings from him eventually. | |

correction, I think it's "Oh, to exercise the *act* of / Falling in love with you" This is such a beautiful song. The first line, "It takes a lifetime to learn how to love" is so beautiful. Shara says she "stole" this line, but I think this whole song is a complete work of genius. |

Interesting that people think this is to a husband. My first impression was that it was for a mother to her unwanted child. She refers to him as "boy," which would seem more appropriate for a child than a husband. "Empty, the bottle drains no more" would seem to be a reference to a baby bottle. On the other hand, "your angry hands" and "waking in fear of you" are more appropriate for the first perhaps this is a child who is a sociopath. Or perhaps she is frightened of him because she's getting rid of him? |

This song is full of the reasoning common to Zen/Buddhist thinking: "We exist without existing" and "I understand it but I don't show it / so I won't think it" There's a call to be vigilant at the end that is very striking: "you have no sense in emptiness / will you try a little harder" Coupled with the swelling of the music, this seems to be the real point of the song... to "be there" or Be Here Now, as Ram Dass would say. |

"Grace is a gift for the fallen, dear You're an angry blade and you're brave But you're all alone" That's a beautiful line. It speaks of healing that comes when you allow it to. But her anger is keeping healing from her. He then likens her to a fallen angel in the next stanze. It's amazing song-writing. |
