As Tall as Lions – Milk and Honey Lyrics 17 years ago
I have to agree a lot with fabianna's comment. Also to add:

"let's put away the sticks and stones
be human beings"
Sounds like they are in heavy arguements and he wishes them to be "humans" about this all.

"I have the sense to be afraid to be a fool" Perhaps he keeps coming back into the relationship. Even though she continues to push him out and push him against walls, situations he can't get out of.

"You told me once your body flowed
with milk and honey
but what happened to our boy
inside your tummy?"
Are some of the saddest lines I've ever heard... Its obvious that she has gotten an abortion. Perhaps the relationship went really wrong and in anger she aborted the baby. Poor guy, whoever the song is about :<

"I have the sense to be afraid, to be a fool
but I'm on the fence
to make you stay or to be cruel"
At this point he still loves her, but now because of what happened with the aborted baby, he is wondering whether he should try and keep the relationship going or be cruel. I can relate to this entirely as it is in my scorpio nature to be cruel to people who hurt me.... Even if I loved them once.

At this next part, its obvious he has chosen to be cruel:
"You perfume covered helpless louse,
look on the bright side
See, every time you laugh out loud
I'm crying inside"

He's hurt by all of this and she obviously no longer loves him. (Think about the aborted baby). Calling her a louse shows that he despises her yet still loves her as he is "crying inside". Her laughing shows sarcasm, one of the worse forms of cruelty in my opinion.

"Make me believe
believe in you"
Believe that there is love still?

"I should have known you'd kick me hard
when I'm on the ground"
This whole situation was not his fault. It can be seen clearly that she has brought him down "to the ground". "Kicked" him where it hurts. She's hurting him badly, and he tried to hold on. But she keeps pushing him away. He should have known she'd hurt him.
As fabianna said: "loving someone means giving them the power to break your heart and trusting them not to."

Beautiful.

As Tall as Lions – A Break, A Pause Lyrics 17 years ago
"You look like someone tongue-tied finding the word "goodbye"
Seems to refer to the ending of the relationship, or rather the "break" or "pausing" of it.

"You're only good when you're on your back you
evening virgin cotton nymph"
Is where that "lust" comment came from. However I think this is what someone would say when you are in an argument. Like when you no longer care for someone as you once did. Things like "you were only good for sex" (on your back) can come up.
This is also futher emphasized by the "evening virgin cotton nymph" line. I see it as at night she would be a "virgin" for sex. A nymph can be used in terms to a female who is extremely sexually active. In this song she seems to be refered to as a "whore". Sex seemed to be the base of her relationship with him when he actually loved her.

I still do not know where the cotton term might have come from. Perhaps he means to tie it in with the word "nymph" as in mythology there are various types relating to nature. Perhaps either a land or wood nymph. Perhaps it also relates to clothing, as cotton is a popular fibre for clothes. And so by "cotton nymph" it is a "whore" who keeps most of her clothes on (just a thought).

"Who's kidding who now, You're an overpaid actress"
Also seems to mean he is in pain from her apparent lack of love for him and he has just found out (hence the name calling earlier on). It seems like he once loved her but she was all lust, an "actress" or a fake. Perhaps she had cheated on him? Lusted over someone else and he has found out her love is fake.

"Yeah, I feel so down" is obvious. It repeats through the song and would relate to him feeling very sad over the situaion.

"I'm an anthropophobiac" is a person afraid of people. Perhaps now from this pain he has withdrawn from society, using "pills" and "alcohol" as a way of escaping reality. He is so drugged that he can't even sleep in his own bed, and instead rests "on the floor near the bed". "I can't get over your love".

"stopped eating and sleeping
I bought some drugs that I never heard of
and asked what the damage was"
Are some powerful lines. This makes me think he is so much in depression that it doesn't matter if he lives or not after all this. He must have loved her so much.

"A wolf from the steppes" is probably a reference to a text called the "Treatise of the Steppenwolf". For more information go here: http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/steppenwolf/quotes.html
Also, for easier browsing sparknotes defines a steppenwolf as:
"The Steppenwolf - A middle-aged recluse who lives alone in a bourgeois lodging house. Harry Haller refers to himself as a “Steppenwolf” because he feels like a lonely wolf of the steppes, removed from the obsessions and conventions common to most people. Harry believes himself to be divided between two extremes: a man-half who shares the ideals and interests of humanity, and a beast-half that sees those aspirations as futile, absurd vanities."

This then relates to the line beforehand that says he is an anthopophobiac. He feels extremely lonely and yet longs for those "ideals and interests of humanity". Perhaps longing for love.

The last lot of lines I found really hard to analyse. However after some thought I've worked out something...

"You're lost in your mind
I believe that anyone can see it"
Could mean she is lost in her own ideals and belief? Too absorbed in herself? Dellusional?

"For only one time
we can be together if you want it."
Perhaps he is giving her another chance? After more thought to this and the last lines it also makes me think that he now wants lust. "For only one time we can be together" as in they can be together in lust. He seems to be over her now (after that depression stage).

"I know what you want
but baby what you want I just don't got it"
Again relating back to the previous lines. After all that depression I get the feeling he no longer loves her. Now he's happy to just use her as the evening virgin cotton nymph she is. But what she wants -now- is his love. It looks like a reversal of roles. Perhaps she has grown fond of him and really wants him now... but its too late. He doesn't have any more love for her.

"Get away from my door
I heard you sell the truth but I don't buy it"
Or perhaps he doesn't believe her. Perhaps because of all the hurt he believes she still wants lust and so was fine to do so (now), but now he's confused.

Hard song to analyse. Need more opinions @.@

As Tall as Lions – Maybe I'm Tired Lyrics 17 years ago
I have to agree with "beardofhate".
The lyrics relate simply to someone believing they aren't good enough for someone. He's tired but he wants to keep her. The relationship is going through trouble and he's really unsure if he is good enough for her, to love him as much as he does. "Your love just kept me wondering".

"Unlock the box you heart's encased, Hope it wont change"
Opening ones heart out to love and hoping it won't be hurt by the "games she'll want to start playing".

"Scared to let you go" could be being scared of letting go of that love he has for her. He's tired of never knowing whether she loves him back.

"If I can be saved, show me the way. Help me help myself, baby"
I'm not exactly sure what he wants saving from. But he needs help with this from the person he loves.

"Don't be confused, our love is true
Just tell by the way I'm looking at you"
Is reassuring that he loves her. However I don't see that reasurance being returned to from the girl. Its him looking at her, and with the other lyrics in the song it makes me think that he loves her more than she loves him.

He's not good enough for her to love him back?

As Tall as Lions – Love Love Love (Love Love) Lyrics 17 years ago
Good comment fabianna ;) The joys and doubts of love seems to be exactly what this song is about. The background vocals really did it in for me.

To add:

"Love's not a grave, it won't decay on you.
Too many days I was afraid of, Love."
Sounds to me that it is also referring to the amount of times people are hurt by love. And that even though it occurs love will come again.

"Suffering's the only thing we're good at?" Again makes me think of the pain in love. But the chorus really brings some optimism to it all.

"Dreaming Oh yeah we're dreaming (a whole world in a slumber.)"
Always makes me think of something I've thought of before. Perhaps we're all really living in a giant dream and one day we'll wake up and this is the end.

"But don't get too attatched to the living, even every single memory's fleeting."
Reminds me of losing love to death. Not being attached to the living means you can't be "torn asunder" when they pass away. "That's a fact".

"But to my suprise, no reason why, one day i woke up and realized." is again going back into love after all that pain of losing it.

"Keep you in my focus with love and affection. I'll..." Is probably my favorite part of the song :) The person will continue to love them forever and ever even until the end of that relationship. Through pain and all love comes through.

Great happy feeling song. Perks me up in sad times :')

As Tall as Lions – Ghost of York Lyrics 17 years ago
This song isn't about lost love as many people have been saying. As mentioned by emilyRDH who went to their performance, ATAL introduced the song as a "song about imaginary friends".
When I first heard this it reminded me of visitors as well. You can see it in their lyrics--

"I know we're all souls just trying to connect with someone, but we're all left searching on our own"

"Souls" as in spirits or ghosts. "Left searching on our own" suggests he is lonely. Searching for love. Perhaps he then imagined a ghost appear to keep him company.

The song also produces sounds that only the main person seems to hear. For example:
"Tell me that you could hear it: three taps under the floorboard. Don't say I'm losing it, maybe you're deaf."

"Could have sworn that I locked all these windows fairly tight. Shut the door, hear a knock. she starts turning off the lights"
This part would mean that there is actually no way for another person to enter the room. By "She starts turning off the lights" this could relate to the she-spirit blacking out the house (think scary movies).

"I saw you dressed all in white, I saw you pass right by. But maybe I had too much wine"
"Dressed in white" clearly relates to "ghosts". By the line about wine, he is thinking maybe he isn't really seeing that spirit and it is the alcohol (another symbol for being lonely. Downing the "spirits" and drowning ones sorrows away).

"Tell me that you could see it, a ghost who's skin is porcelain" again with the title. Porcelain to me means something white and pure like the skin of a ghost or something beautiful.

"In a York hotel hall" seems to be a film setting as in a place where you're likely to be presented with a spirit.

"You say that you're alone. But I know I can't leave you lonely on your own"
A lonely spirit? This to me relates back to the first lines in the song. Souls trying to connect with someone, but forever searching on our own. The main character is suggesting that they should be "lonely" together. I love it.

Finally, "I hope you come back tonight, you never said goodbye" is a line I'm not completely sure about. Perhaps the ghost left without a word?

To be completely honest this song does remind me of lost love (having experienced it myself) through death and now that person is visiting again. This could also tie in with the lines "you never said good bye" as in the person died suddenly. However this would have been before I read the lyrics properly.
This song reminds me so much more about being visited by something beautiful and "imaginary" during lonely times. Longing for love and imagining it to appear.

I adore this song though. (Try listening to it in the middle of the night when you really are feeling lonely. It gives me the chills.)
