Your hostility towards Christine's songs is remarkable. Seems like you have some kind of strange bias. It's a simple, gorgeous, honest song. Tusk is such an experience. Christine's songs are rooted in simple blues lyrics arranged with classicism and jazz in her piano. Listen for it, man. You can hear her move to California and become something else. If you don't enjoy the story inside that song, you shouldn't be allowed to hear it. It's the story. The whole album is the band's story. Go listen to all the songs that charted.

I'm actually wondering if this song isn't more about a social criticism, like a lot of other Haines penned songs.

I've only heard it twice, so I'll listen more and maybe come back with a bit of a gander at unpacking it's meaning. :)

I think this song is about someone he admires from afar, then he manages to initiate a relationship, then suddenly, time flies and they're in a relationship "undressing like there were no parts to hide", and then (as we all know) relationships get really complicated. And he watches her sort of implode and this is an observation of the tumult that is coming from someone he worships.

I don't think this song is necessarily about rape either. It's too ambiguous to pin to one specific interpretation. I think it more or less states a lot of universal truths about relationships that become dysfunctional.

I'll try not to make this into a dissection of my own relationship, but there are specific lines that make me think of the dysfunction - from both sides.

Your the glacier, I'm the bonfire - this shows an opposition, she being icy, cold, and he being violent, heated. But he still has a very passionate, profound love for the other. "Now I want to be in your hide (skin?) and seek (see?)" And I also am not sure "Now I want to make children" screams rapist either. Obsession in an unbalanced relationship? Perhaps. And the ropes don't have to mean a restraint on the one partner for exploitation from the other partner. I interpreted it as perhaps ropes tied to each other?

Overall, the perspective of the partner the song is coming from (we'll call them P1) is that they glorify the reciever of the song (P2). P1 HAS felt P2. The song does not say "What a wonder it would be to feel you", so there's value to that language. P2's hideout is a safe place, ("cry out when you're in trouble", etc.). P1 is trying really hard, and their intensity is making P2 shy away, P1 being very aware of this "Do I scare you, etc." There is acknowledgment there. "Is it over/does it hurt you/all I wanted was to divert you", I think this is a more honest statement than we're wanting to accept. The relationship has drawn a very unclear end, and P1 is very wounded by this and suspects P2 of being able to carry on as usual.

And lastly, "You're the ruby over diamonds" - I read someone interpreted the ruby as a menstrual representation, saying rubies are more valuable than diamonds. I always thought diamonds were more valuable than rubies, but rubies were more rare - because everyone wants diamonds. So, in effect, P2 is rare, interesting, unusual. And P1 desires that, not the average typical bombshell/hunk that everyone else is lusting after. They chose someone who seemingly no one else is choosing/would have chosen and it isn't adding up to them.

Just my interpretation, because I think even songwriters can accept rape as socially unacceptable, perhaps even in art.
