| Sun Kil Moon – Lost Verses Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| yeah i keep reading about how Katy was his muse so that what make sense that "Lost Verses" (arguably his masterpiece) is about her passing ("I came up from under her warm sheets") and so she is the fog personified as ghost. i love the senses of time and place in his songs. | |

Yes, the song is certainly filled with Biblical imagery. It also contains other symbols of spirituality like "sacred cow." I interpret this song as an account of end times, our times, in which spirituality, art, and religion are all gasping their last great breath before the end (or beginning) of this world. I also like the way this song shows the predestined nature of all life, that we are all in a vast story, and that it is happening right now: we are players on a players stage. Sufjan is really into this kind of philosophy/world view, which is why he would have chosen to cover it. The way he mixes the sound of the music in the song, stylistically, with a kind of a folk rock mellowness and a grandiose orchestration also adds to the paradoxical meaning of the song. |

Woah I too just had my mind completely blown when I read that. Such an amazing connection. What a song, What a cover! and my God what an amazing book. I'm almost euphoric right now... Magical Realism |

BE ALIVE! The Song Meaning of Ocean Breathes Salty in two Sentences This song expresses the IDEA that one’s life may in fact be one’s after life (“rewind”); therefore, beyond being about suicide, a girl, or religion (as so many have commented), it is really about the free will of any individual choosing to craft meaning out of his or her existence rather than wasting it (modest mouse’s lyrics are often existential in theme). Hence, the boy in the video who, through imagination, resurrects, which is ironically Christian in theme (note the band members appearance through crosses at the end of the video), the dying bird into a meaningful life experience (the mother’s face is not shown because she does not understand) is a metaphor for the musicians themselves creating meaning in life through their music. (Btw the Sun Kil Moon cover of this song is equally dynamite) |
