I actually did an interview with Ben and asked what this song was about; APR: Speaking of songs, we were hoping you might give us some insight into the real meaning behind “Darby’s Song”. We’ve read that its possibly about you having a daughter... BN: Nope. Don’t have any daughters. [Laughs] People like to make up their own explanations. APR: We also read that it was about one of Brian’s friends that had passed away and he promised that he would take care of her little girl, is that a little closer? BN: Well Brian had been real close to Darby and Katie both, and so he had just written a couple of lines in his journal... He wrote, “I loved your mama more than she loved me” and “the hardest part about dying is the ones that get left behind.” So he had those two lines and I just took those and put music and finished the words, so thats what its basically about. But its kind of... Yeah, It all pretty much stemmed from those two lines. But I don’t know, we never play it live. |
