I love this song! I started singing this one time loudly during lunch in highschool and one of my friends didn't know it was a song and thought I was being serious XD The general feeling I get of the song is someone who's lying to themselves by trying to be someone else so he could fit in with everyone else but he's just so compulsive he keeps fucking up and ending up, as he says in the song, committing social suicide. He gets so frustrated trying to be someone else and he knows he can't keep it up: "I'm riding hard on the last legs of every lie, And the BMX bike of my life is about to explode, I'm about to explode" He deals with the stress by drinking, and that's how he deals with his situation and his life. But he's finally giving up on it all, and breaks down (by a slow descent into alcoholism) even though he knew it was coming: For the last time with feeling we'll try not to smile As we cover our heads and drink heavily into the nights That's no shocking surprise. He still hold the general view of most alcoholics that they can quit whenever they want to, but they just don't want to. It's easier to drink than to not: I believe that I can, overcome this and beat everything in the end But I choose to abuse for the time being, maybe I'll win, but for now I've decided to die With the 'Sister Soldier' stanza it sounds like he's about to come back from it, someone's helping him recover, but in the end he ends up just going back to the booze. Cause its easier. |

Actually this song is just about the mind numbing effects of television. '1984'comes from a book by George Orwell called '1984'. And the ever popular line about electric sheep sort of goes a long with the whole "technology taking over" thing. Has anyone heard of "When robots sleep do they dream of electric sheep?" And its partially about Brandon Boyd's nightmare when he was on a plane that someday TV will watch us XD. Lead singer Brandon Boyd: "I was on an airplane when a talk show began playing on the TVs. I decided to start narrating for the people, which is a really great game if you're ever bored enough. I realized a time will probably come when television will watch us if we're watching it, if that hasn't already happened, figuratively or literally. It sounded like some sort of pseudo-Big Brother nightmare, so I wrote it down." This song makes me laugh :D |
