| Can I be the only one here who sees the striking similarities between this song and the Carpenters "Goodbye to Love"? | |

Clearly, anyone with a brain can see that this song is about alcoholism. Anyone who thinks it's about suicide or convincing someone to kill themselves, is a moron. End of discussion. "Goodbye to Romance" - Well, that may actually be about suicide. |

I agree with frig neutorn. This song is about the guilt of a breakup, but particularly about the breakup of his first love. The lyrics indicate that it is written about a year after the breakup "...for the first time in a year". "You mean nothing..." - the last fight "I can lose myself in Chinese art or American girls" - Trying to distract himself from the depression/pain with other pleasures. "The same image haunts me in sequence..." - The memory of this first relationship's beginning and it's eventual bitter end haunts him every time he feels he's becoming close to someone else. "I will never be clean again" - He has lost the innocence he had with this first love. All other relationships are now tainted by the thought that they may also not be permanent, that they my also end. He will never have that innocence again. |

| Got to agree with Graviton: This is a brilliant filthy song. "...in my dreams, we are rocking in a similar motion". Lol. | |

Interesting. The background vocals are from Friedrich Nietzsche's Antichrist (from the site I noted above): "What is good? – All that heightens the feeling of power, the will to power, power itself in man What is happiness? – The feeling that power increases – that a resistance is overcome. Not contentment, but more power. Not peace, but war. Virtue in the Renaissance style, virth, virtue free of moralic acid. The weak and ill-constituted shall perish: the first principle of our philanthropy" I'm thinking maybe this song is about either Nietzcsche, Hitler or the Nazis in general. |

'points' refers to pointed toed loafers or boots that were popular men's fasion in the late 1950's early 1960's. Google: Winklepickers or Chelsea Boot and you should see some pictures of some. "tight pants, points (pointed shoes)" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winklepickers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beatle_boots |

Lyrically, quite possibly one of the greatest pop rock songs ever. I love how the lightning/thunder reference goes from youthful sexuality: "And oh the wonder Felt the lightning And we waited on the thunder" to age and the melancholy of death in one simple verse: "I woke last night to the sound of thunder How far off I sat and wondered ....With autumn closing in" This is a song any serious song writer should study. So compact, every line with significance and impact. |

I think these are the real lyrics (from http://glitch6.blogspot.com/2011/04/gods-gift-maggot-lyrics.html) (Feels good, it heightens the feeling of power, will to power, power it’s simply not) To a life, less gleaming Forgotten is the morning dawn Learn to read with no degree Bloody lies and black sun (I’ll tell you why) In the eyes of God The sky’s the limit Proceeding in this darkest way Glowing back at the end - your halo You’re bloody righteous Became a life broken, forever in judgment Of his righteousness Absurd Man be afraid Falling back inane Over mature The chair backward falling down Knives in eyes Made us feel brave Fragile Falling another way Really brave puts on a grin On the floor in a pool of blood On lifeless grin Back to the bedroom With a grin When master knocks down phantoms Living out miseries It’s hard to fathom what depth man will go It’s hard to fathom, hard - talking my god God gave maggots God gave maggots God gave maggots God gave maggots Eye sockets feed the faith, no less then back again Open wound in as much over-silence backwash God gave maggots God gave maggots God gave maggots In a silent way, back to where they came Description of a way Temple’s visit Ghostly remain No more room to blame Now they’re winning A conservation of life Prize work Prize work Is the un-doing Remains to show the failure of all Bedroom Borrowed Solace Coyness is the easy road Describe magic Creation (…belief in constant relationship of perish from birth springs full of our philanthropy) Oh Sean, your life became mush God gift maggots God gift maggot God gift maggot My friend maggot Life filled maggot |

As odd as this may sound, I always had a suspicion that this is a pro-life song. Particularly the phrase "to push away all growth within puzzles me offers soul to nothing" And "the message screams it's purity that those with no rights display the right to have no life to have respect they must accept a world committing suicide, do you respect a world, committing suicide?" (i.e, a society killing themselves or their own). I have no particular agenda, just a thought. |
