| Amanda Palmer – Blake Says Lyrics | 17 years ago |

This song reminds me of a boy I knew. His name was Jaaron, and he had a mental disease. Something close to Autism. He was the most intelligent person I've ever known, he just wasn't able to function socially. Before I knew him, he lived in Alaska. This song makes me sad, thinking about that guy. He was such an interesting person. "But in his velvet mind" Soft mind, soft person. The guy I knew was soft and nice to everyone. Even though everyone secretly laughed at him behind his back, leading me to this next one: "Blake says no one ever really loved him They just faked it to get money from the government" Everyone was really horrible to this guy. They pretended to be nice to him but then went off and laughed about him. I think he knew it really, but just didn't show it. "Like Candy in his prime He likes his shirts to shine" I remember he always looked so neat and tidy. Always wore pristine shirts and khakis. There's more I could say, but I'm about to fall asleep here. This is a beautiful song. |

| My favorite part of the song is the two "I'm a friendly man" bits. Squeal. | |

| This song on the new album "No, Virginia," is almost favorite--it's a tie between this and The Kill. I completely forgot about the seduction of Amanda by her piano teachers. I love the fastbeat songs by the Dolls, and I love the way I have to set the songs on "repeat 1" to understand it. | |

I always thought, listening to this, that Amanda was talking to an ex, and with my version sporting the "and special occasions we'll split between parent who forced us to hate them on alternating weekends" lyrics I think about my personal experience with that arrangement of time splitting in a divorce. But reading this version as well, I see that it makes sense that it's about a break up. I got my hands on a copy of "The Dresden Dolls Companion" and Amanda says that it is about the ex boyfriend mentioned in The Jeep Song. She wanted to take precautions so that there was no chances of ever meeting. It also is about 9/11, because like someone else mentioned, he had moved to NYC around the time that happened. This is a beautiful song, but of course what Doll's creation is not? |
