I think it's pretty self-explanatory, and I'm not sure if he's referring to fourth street in NYC, but I love this song because it describes literally word for word a relationship I have with someone, and to top it off we spent a lot of time in Washington Square. And yes, the last four lines are terrific. |

The song, I think, is pretty self-explanatory, and I really like Shiggy's explanation. I think just about everyone at some point in their lives has felt like this, maybe not to the suicidal aspect of it. I actually never saw that way of looking at it until I read the comments on here, but it does make a whole lot of sense. It saddens me to think these thoughts, for the sake of art or in the form of actual feelings, were in Bowie's mind at anytime. "I'm invisible and dumb, no-one will recall me" - if he only knew! Which is why his updated version of the song is a bit more haunting. |

I feel like this song is about realizing you're in a relationship that just isn't working. It's from the point of view of a person who truly wants it to work and thinks it can, but it's starting to become clear that it's just a chain of repeating issues and that he's more attached than in love. The constant repeating of lyrics I think attributes a lot to the idea of repitition of unresolved conflicts or a mundane life, or even trying to convince himself of the newfound realization. |

This song embodies anxiety in every way, lyrically and musically. I think it's a fine example of making the two compliment each other perfectly to convey a mood. It's one of my favorites, a work of art. |

I could be going out on a limb here, but if this song does have some kind of deep meaning, I think it's about what casues obstacles in one's life. It implies they are constant and that they are from everywhere and everything, but by referring to it as "Blank" it implies it is nothing. So I figure it implies the source of major problems comes from the self, how you inteact with others and the choices you make. |

I don't think it's as well rounded as some of their other songs but I love its charm.
I only wish I came up with that innuendo first! |

I love this song, it's pure genius. I definitely agree with everyone on here saying it's about searching for something more, whether it be mental, sexual, or physical. I wonder, though, if it could even refer to Dante's Inferno. Many lines of the song coincide with the book. I won't bore you with all the comparisons, but I find it interesting. |
