This has always read as optimistic to me. In the first half, she's trying to be more of what he wants (when he said he liked the clothes I wore, I became a tailor), while in the second half her actions are chosen independently, with no real thought as to what he thinks.
"When he said he was leaving, I took up the violin" seems like a very positive sentiment to me. She's free now, "who am I" meaning, essentially, "now that I don't have to please this man, what am I *able* to be?" She is a whole person, and recounts it as she moves forward into an autonomous life. |

love this song; it's cathartic. whether or not it was intended to be about mental health, it definitely applies imo. |

This song is completely literal. As in, there are robots, and he guts one so he can escape a prison, but he's not ACTUALLY a robot even though he looks like one. He's here to help you, and he's thanking the robot for providing him with a way out. KWH was a concept album; this was an introduction to the world it was set in.
The robots are still racist, though. |

I'm kind of out of touch; I really have no idea which of the bands that I enjoy are popular. I figure if I know about it it can't be that obscure, but apparently this is one of the few times I was wrong. There's no need to be a jerk about it. |

I think this song is amazing. My dad used to do sky diving instruction(in Hawaii), so this song is sort of special to me. Besides that, though, it's just a lovely little tune. It always cheers me up on bad days. |
