| Thanks Demon. Not sure how I missed that (In Miami) part. Now that you've pointed it out it's crystal clear. | |

| Thanks for the corrections. Once you think you heard something it's hard to try to hear that something differently all on your own - the help is appreciated. I think you're probably right about the, "you go and get gone" part too, but I'm not certain. Maybe someone else can chime in. | |

| By the way... The "Miami bd" part over the choruses, I'm pretty sure it's saying Miami, but I have no clue what the second word is. I just put "bd" for filler until someone figures it out. | |

| I did my best. I'm sure I may have botched up a few lines. Let me know if anyone has suggestions and I will correct whatever is agreed upon. | |

| I had a little help from the booklet (via a forum) on the second stanza. All the rest I did my best at on my own. I'm sure I may have botched up a few lines. Let me know if anyone has suggestions and I will correct whatever is agreed upon. | |

| Wow, great job. Definitely more than I could've understood without some help. | |
| Foals – What Remains Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Yeah, I think I agree with phipsie about the end. Up at the top you have "lives" instead of "lies." Good job though, better than I could've done. | |

| Did my best, I know I may have botched a few lines. If you have corrections let me know and I'll get to them in a semi-timely manner. Thanks. | |

| I did my best. I'm not quite sure what the last word of the chorus is (green, greed, grief, etc). If there are any other corrections let me know and I'll edit it in a semi-timely manner. Thanks. | |

I don't think it's, "and you would rot the brain in her head" I think all of those parts are actually, "and you were born for greatness" |

| For me this rivals 42 for best song on this album. | |
| Death Cab for Cutie – Lightness Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
What makes this song so great for me is the sheer number of metaphorical meanings it holds in my mind. Depending on my mood I can take a unique and meaningful translation of the lyrics each time the sounds reach my mind… I generally agree with the “true” meaning of the song to be about an intimate relationship between a man and woman. And, I have no doubt my own personal favorite interpretation is not even on the charts for what was originally intended by the author. But here it is anyway for your consideration: Firstly, the title: Lightness Given my interpretation of the lyrics, I’m highly inclined to partially agree with someone’s (duellynoted) former post which refers us to the book, “The Unbearable Lightness of Being”. However, I personally think the song philosophically disagrees with the theme of the book (which is that every decision is insignificant and life is ultimately inconsequential). I think the title in this instance is meant to present a slightly amended version of the theory of Lightness. One that says: embrace the lightness of being, live life in such a way so that you would be content to repeat it, because it’s the one chance you have to discover anything and everything you could ever want to know... “There's a tear in the fabric of your favorite dress And I'm sneaking glances” -- The author is a curious person who wants to know more about the world and is trying to learn all he can about life and “mother” nature (read: life’s purpose/mystery). He peers through “tears” (educates himself, gains new experiences, analyzes theories, etc) in mother nature’s “dress” (the shroud of mystery which surrounds life itself) to “sneak glances” (as he decodes these passing glimpses of knowledge he’s collected he tries to understand the world around him and gain insights into its meaning) “Looking for the patterns in static They start to make sense The longer I'm at it” -- As he grows older he tries to understand all of the seemingly unconnected yet somehow interconnected circumstances which shape the world around him (the “patterns in static”). With age comes knowledge, and a vague understanding of how the world works. But nothing certain is revealed or understood. (ie: why it only “starts” to makes sense the longer he’s at it). “Your heart is a river that flows from your chest Through every organ” -- There are many essential truths and levels of understanding in life. These truths and understandings randomly reveal themselves to us throughout course of our lives, and sometimes do so in unlikely circumstances. Hence the universe’s mysteries flow from its unknown center throughout the world, providing opportunities to discover some of these random pieces of knowledge during any situation we find ourselves in throughout the course of our lives (“Throughout every organ”). “Your brain is the dam And I am the fish Who can't reach the core” --Alas, the amount of knowledge inherent in the universe’s vast and flowing river is so immeasurable it actually acts as a dam (“Your brain is the dam”). It essentially blocks the “fish” from ever getting away from any stream of water he’s in to see the river’s veins for a whole. Therefore, the author is a fish destined (doomed? –if you subscribe to the typical definition of Lightness) to swim a random course within the infinite tributaries of the universe’s river of knowledge. Never able to escape the river to discover its true essence (“Who can’t reach the core”). “Oh, instincts are misleading You shouldn't think what you're feeling They don't tell you what You know you should want” -- Returning to the (modified) theme of Lightness this strikes me as the author speaking generally to an audience. He is simply stating that when the burden and purpose of life seem too much or unclear that you shouldn’t think such thoughts. Because caving in to the unbearable lightness of being may be what you feel like doing, but if you take a harder look at things it is not what you should want. Basically it says to me not to become overwhelmed with melancholy or despair when life deals you unfortunate cards. Instead you know you should stomach the misfortune, learn from it, and try to make your life better because, or in spite, of it. And finally… “Ivory Lines Lead” -- In this understanding of the song the Ivory Lines are wrinkles, scars, or age lines in the face/hands/etc which become more clear as we grow older. As you collect these Ivory Lines (grow older) they “Lead” to more information from the universe - gained through its river, by studies, from under its dress, etc. Collecting these Ivory Lines ends up being the purpose all along, not actually discovering their collective meaning. Because even after experiencing where all the “Ivory Lines Lead,” we never know it all… |
