"and gets all the news he needs from the weather report" - reference to the Simon & Garfunkel song "The Only Living Boy In New York" which has a very similar line. "in addition to being a bullfighter and magician" - reference to Orson Welles, who has done both of these things |

"Ghosts are scared of falling down It's hard to see He said to me" I love this part. One of my favourite set of lyrics ever. It turns the idea of ghosts being scary on its head. We are meant to be scared of ghosts, but in this case I imagine a classic white sheet with holes in it speaking to the singer, saying he's scared. And when this ghost is on the floor, it's like the opposite of what we see - we see normal light, except for the ghost - but the ghost sees total darkness, and it's scary for the ghost. Especially when he's on the floor after having fallen down the stairs or something. I have no idea what that rambling stream-of-consciousness dissection of the lyrics was actually meant to mean, but they really do strike a nerve for me. And yes I do realise I sound like a but of a mentalist now. |

| I have to say my reaction to the song is nothing to do with relationships. The title brings drug/trip connotations. I've always imagined it as a hallucinogenic experience where the singer is in some sort of arctic tundra/desolate wasteland spanning as far as the eye can see, alone, looking for his mates. Great song. | |
