What's really fantastic about this song is everytime Duritz yells "they will leave you" all I hear is "I won't leave you" and I think that is so brilliant to be able for an artist to be saying one thing and allow listeners to hear something else.
I love this song. |

I saw an interview where Gibbard was talking about this song, and he said that there were actually two other verses but the producers and everyone else thought that making it short got the point across better than dragging it out...and I think they're right. "You can do better than me, but I can't do better than you." plain and simple. |

It's weird for me, and I don't know if it is intentional, but everytime Gibbard says "Who's gonna watch you die" at the end of the song when it's repeating, it's he keeps asking who is going to love him the way he loved Sarah. |

Whereas Plans seemed somewhat optimistic and hopeful, Narrow Stairs is so dark when you really get into it.
I really, really like this song. It takes so much honesty to write something like this. Who ever wants to admit that they have had these feelings toward someone? Absolutely stalker-fabulous. |

What I really love about this song is the last line, "and they knew it was only a matter of time," because that determines the entire song's meaning. You could take it two different ways, it was a matter of time before a) the rain comes and puts out the fire or b) everything burns. By putting this at the end of the song, Gibbard is letting the listener decide what the meaning of the song really is.
Undoubtly one of my favorite songs on Narrow Stairs. |
