Arcade Fire – No Cars Go Lyrics 16 years ago
i like Jamieeheartsplastic's interpretation, because that is indeed a lovely place to be :).
i think that the fact that the song seems to be written from the perspective of children is relevent though, which wouldn't really fit with romance. but children symbolise purity and imagination, especially "Between the click of the light and the start of the dream" - just before they go to sleep, when dreams are forming and their imaginations are active, free from society's influences. but for adults - i spose it's a time when you're most relaxed, and arguably most yourself.

Arcade Fire – Windowsill Lyrics 16 years ago
The way it follows antichrist television blues is really clever. like on a literal level ATB is quite an attack on the distorted perspectives that fame and money can create and people damaging their children by living through them, but i think you can look at it as a wider statement about modern culture - like the way that religion/morality/culture and maybe politics etc. can be corrupted to the extent that they are damaging to the people they should be looking after. so then windowsill would be like a response to that, about children/citizens dealing with the "rising tide" if an insustainable lifestyle and culture created by previous generations (hence the "father's debt" business). you can apply it to practically any area of politics - war, economics, climate change, general social responsibility - and it seems pretty relevent.
What do people make of "the house on fire"/"rising sea" bit? before i'd caught many of the other lyrics - when i'd just heard the "father's debt" bit i kind of interprested that as a reference to insurance fraud - burning to house down deal with the debts through insurance. but then it there's the "why is the night so still? why did i take the pill?" bit, which kind of suggests suicide? p'raps it's daft to seek a literal interpretation when there are so many interesting abstract ones though!

I know what you mean about the way it follows antichrist television blues, it's really clever. i don't necessarily think it's just about things like the media and all that - like on a literal level ATB is quite an attack on the distorted perspectives that fame and money can create and people damaging their children by living through them, but i think you can look at it as a wider statement about modern culture - like the way that religion/morality/culture and maybe politics etc. can be corrupted to the extent that they are damaging to the people they should be looking after. so then windowsill would be like a response to that, about children/citizens dealing with the "rising tide" if an insustainable lifestyle and culture created by previous generations (hence the "father's debt" business). you can apply it to practically any area of politics - war, economics, climate change, general social responsibility - and it seems pretty relevent.

The Dresden Dolls – Bad Habit Lyrics 17 years ago
if it's about biting the skin off around the nails the song is exaggerating it to provide a deeper explanation - like how girl anachromism is s'posed to be to do with her being born early though a caesarian but that fact isn't massively prominant in the song - kind of like an extended metaphor. or p'raps they've said it's not about self harm so the kind of people who think self-harm and suicide are the same thing will actually give the song a listen rather than just making assumptions based on their prejudices. either way it expresses a certain attitude towards self-harm really well, whereas most presentation of that kind of thing in culture is pretty two-dimensional and unrealistic.
i like this song a lot.

The Dresden Dolls – The Perfect Fit Lyrics 17 years ago
i think it's about lonliness, like a lot of the dolls' songs. and kind of the way your priorities change as you get older - like if you're a precocious child but as you get older your peers catch up with you and you can't rely on you natural talent anymore it can make you feel a bit worthless. and people use other things like sex and sexual prowess to feel like they're worth more, especially if they feel they have to be ahead of everyone all the time, but it's inevitable that you'll reach a point when that's not worth anything to you anymore either and it's just damaging to you physically and emotionally. then you have to change your priorities and concentrate on what's actually best for you, but you still have to deal with your past in every relationship and personal experience, and sometimes you can feel like you've damaged yourself too much in the way you've approached life in the past so it feels like you'll never be able to reach your full potential.
amazing song, &love the doors reference.
