Thats the dumbest thing I've ever heard. First of all, it doesnt say anything about a "white girl" so that reference is out the window. You've obviously never been in a similar situation to the one the song writer was in. I know I kinda am right now being a college student. I'm in love with my girlfriend and want to keep buying her things and taking care of her so the bills keep piling up so I'm working the night shift to try and get ahead but I still have no money because i spend it all on her. |

According to his interview with Rolling Stone, a major influence of this song was watching his son learn to tread water in the ocean for the first time. The lyric "I gave you your life but you give me mine" is simply saying the he created his son but his son is one of his reasons for living. Beautiful song as all others are on this album |
