Porcupine Tree – I Drive the Hearse Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is about guilt (aka "my ball and chain"). I don't think "you were always my mistake" is about a faulty relationship (although that was my first thought), I think it refers to a man he killed in a car accident - the one from the title track "The Incident", around which the album centers; the incident that inspired Steve to make the album. In that context, this song is the aftermath of that incident. I take it that this man is a literal hearse driver, and when he's not on the job, he drives it to unwind. The hearse isn't what the song is about, it is the vessel through which the man's story is told.

Steven Wilson – Abandoner Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm pretty sure it's about a breakup, hence the title. Lines that support this:
"The other half is somewhere else" the other half being his lover.
"Time freezes all. Flawless eyes" the memory of what she looked like.
"The rope you used to tie your soul" the metaphor of a relationship as being tied to another person.
"I reach for you, denied your touch" self-explanatory.

The rest is very visual, but I'm not sure of the meaning. It may only have meaning to the person in the song.

Porcupine Tree – Synesthesia Lyrics 17 years ago
I think I've got it, and I can't believe I'm the first to make the connection between the name of the song and the lyrics. Synesthesia is basically people giving meanings or having emotional attatchments to numbers. Here, Steve refers to the statistics of deaths during a war, how soldiers are listed as a number, and they become a meaningless statistic with no resonance. So the message in the song is that the death of a soldier is not just a number, that the number means something - hence the title "Synesthesia". It reminds me of the saying "One person dies, it's a tragedy. Ten people die, it's a statistic." The song is a brilliantly unique play on meanings, like a lot of Steven's older songs.

Porcupine Tree – .3 Lyrics 17 years ago
I originilly thought the title referred to the calibre of a gun as well. How people name weaponry by a number to cover up the monstrosity of what it actually does and remove any emotional reaction from the name.

Porcupine Tree – So Called Friend Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is directly related to the two characters from Open Car and also The Start of Something Beautiful. The rest is fairly self-explanatory when you know all three songs.

Porcupine Tree – Lazarus Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the main difficulty in interpreting this song is understanding who is speaking at what point. For example, the line "As the cheerless towns pass my window' I'm sure is spoken by David. However, the "voice inside [his] head" is probably the child's mother from the film, and Steven Wilson explains thet the song is from the mother to her child, not the mother to David. I also didn't think that the mother would directly speak to him.

Anyway, from what I can tell, the mother and child (who I am assuming is called Lazarus, because they are from a religious cult) have been divided by death, and I believe are using David as a means to finding each other. I think the mother is speaking to her child through David somehow.

Porcupine Tree – Where We Would Be Lyrics 17 years ago
This is crazy! I was working on a script for a film I'm going to shoot. In the film, the main character's friend dies at his hands in the war. The story takes place a few years after, and the main character still believes his friend is alive. The audience realises that the friend has died through a series of flashbacks. Anyway, right at the end of the movie, after the main character realises his friend is dead, it flashes right back to when they were children, talking about what they want to happen to their bodies after they die, and they make a pact that whoever dies first gets buried in the other's backyard, then it cuts to the credits. Now just as I was trying to work out what song to use for the credits, I hear this! Even the ambience at the start fits in perfectly, not to mention the lyrics and mood of the song. Porcupine hasn't ever let me down yet.

Porcupine Tree – Blackest Eyes Lyrics 17 years ago
I get the feeling that the song is directed at an adult woman, not a child, and one he has known for a long time. I think the chorus is him trying to identify with her and telling her everything (perhaps before he kills/rapes her or maybe even after?). I think the song is the killer's frame of mind just after it has happened.

Porcupine Tree – Halo Lyrics 17 years ago
I definitely don't think of this song as a criticism of any religion itself. It's about people who use the idea of God to cater to their own wants, hence the line "God in a hole". They adjust their idea of God to suit themselves and act like it justifys their actions. The repetition of "God is" shows this as well, especially since it uses paradoxical terms. This song is brilliant and if anyone who believes in God (myself included) gets offended by this song, then they don't understand it at all.

Coldplay – Strawberry Swing Lyrics 17 years ago
I love this song to death. I feel like it is about childhood, although this is never explicitly stated. However, to me it isn't a "I wish I'd done this as a kid" or "I wish I was a kid" song. Instead, it feels like a reflection of what life was like then, and at the end, it talks about holding onto the things that were important when you were young, because "without you [life is] just a waste of time". This could be talking about a woman, or simply keeping company. That's my interpretation anyway.

Coldplay – Yes Lyrics 17 years ago
I've gotta admit, when I heard Violet Hill, I was a bit worried about Chris' lower register singing, which was almost cringe-worthy at times. However, now that I've heard this, it's quite a relief. The vocal performance was great, and very listenable. When I first heard it, I didn't interpret the lyrics in a sexual way, but when I hear the song now I can't believe I didn't pick up on it. This is actually one of my favourites.

Coldplay – Lovers in Japan/Reign of Love Lyrics 17 years ago
Great songs to relax to; the first seems to wash over you and the second is tranquil and uplifting. Lovers in Japan seems to focus on Coldplay's ususal message of hope and perserverance, Reign of Love describing what love does to you, regardless of whether the other person likes you back, and the helplessness of the lover. I think I like the second better, because it is something new from Coldplay that they've done very well.

Coldplay – 42 Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm on the same boat as ihatehatehaters. I was unsure what I thought of it at first, but now I love it. However, the lyrics are just as vague as any other Coldplay song, but they do sound cool. It is obviously about death, but rather than making a statement, it explores what death means to people.

I think Xim's comment sums it all up, exactly what I was thinking.

Porcupine Tree – Lazarus Lyrics 17 years ago
Actually ignore my last comment, I really have no idea about the characters in the song. I'd think along the lines of Kuroda's comment, as that's the closest we'll get to what the underlying meaning is.

Porcupine Tree – Sentimental Lyrics 17 years ago
I find it interesting that the word "sentimental" was not used in this song, but was used in "Normal", which is pretty much another version of this song. I think I like this one better, especially the way the
"Sullen and bored the kids stay
And in this way wish away each day
Stoned in the mall the kids play
And in this way wish away each day"
bit is sung and played.

Porcupine Tree – The Sound Of Muzak Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree completely with Bloodrager. Connecting this overtly with the theme of the album seems a bit convoluted to me, I think it was purposely put there to speak to people who disapprove of the theme of the album. It's art and doesn't need to change just so the general audience doesn't get offended. All great music ideas have caused controversy, eg. jazz and rock. But if those ideas had been supressed our music today would be that much more dull.

Porcupine Tree – Lazarus Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the song is directed to Lazarus, who is dying. However I don't think it is just the words of the mother. In this bit...

Come to us, Lazarus,
It's time for you to go.

...they are words from both the afterlife and the present life speaking to him at once. Also this bit...

My David, don't you worry
This cold world is not for you
So rest your head upon me
I have strength to carry you

...when it says "this cold world" I think it's talking about death, not life, and that David will not die like Lazarus.

I don't really know anything about the screenplay but that is what I got from the song.

It's one of my favourite Porcupine Tree songs along with Half Light.
