In the most literal sense, this song tells the story of Major Tom, which is obvious. He's an astronaut, perhaps the first astronaut to go up into space ["You've really made the grade"]. The citizens of whatever place Major Tom is from are viewing/hearing this spectacle via radio or television, and the public idolizes him ["And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear"] After Ground Control's briefing to Major Tom, Major Tom himself starts relaying messages to Ground Control about his observations of space after he's ventured out of the capsule. He's obviously awe-struck ["and I'm floating in the most peculiar way/and the stars look very different today"] Something happens when he gets back into the capsule (if he gets back into the capsule at all), and Major Tom seems to know that something is amiss before Ground Control realizes it ["planet earth is blue/and there's nothing I can do/ though I'm past one hundred thousand miles I'm feeling very still/and I think my spaceship knows which way to go/ tell my wife I love her very much"]. After Major Tom's message Ground Control loses commutation with Major Tom ["Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong/can you hear me, Major Tom?"] The last time Ground Control asks Major Tom if he can hear them they are interrupted by his final message ["here I am floating round my tin can/far above the moon/planet earth is blue/and there's nothing I can do"]. That's the most literal interpretation of the song, anyways. This song could also be Bowie's metaphorical way of telling his audience about how he feels isolated because of whatever reason [perhaps his change in stage presence led him to feeling isolated and out of touch with his pervious fanbase]. |
