Regina Spektor – The Call Lyrics 17 years ago
I know this might not be what Spektor meant it to be, but this is the way I interpret it.

I see it as she's singing about Jesus and his followers. First she sings from Jesus' perspective and Jesus is telling us how he/his presence/his influence started to work in our consciousness/lives/heart/soul

"It started out as a feeling
Which then grew into a hope
Which then turned into a quiet thought
Which then turned into a quiet word

And then that word grew louder and louder
'Til it was a battle cry"

then, even though He died and went to heaven, he promises us that if we only "call" on him, he'll be with us again (the call could be a prayer, or when you "accept" christ or whater) and he's not leaving us, so there's no need to say goodbye (if we let him/call on him, he'll live in us sort of thing)

Then the rest of the song is "third person" or maybe it's the "Word" (bible) singing to both parties (us and Jesus) So we transition from the initial "acceptance" to living the life as a "follower".

it says that even though things seem different doesn't mean there isn't a way to handle them, or that the Word isn't relevant to helping you handle them. Then what you can do is trust in God/Jesus as well as a church to be apart of as you head out to life a life that testifies of Christ and His Love (the war can be internal with yourself, or external with spreading the Word).

Then it goes on to talk about to not give up in the pursuit, (follow the light, pick a star) all which seems to be about hope, and because the horizens "dark" maybe you've wandered far from Christ/God and they seem so small now, but if you "follow the light, You'll come back when it's over
No need to say goodbye"

so, if you keep faith (following the light/star) then in the end God/Christ will lead you back, so there's no need to give up or say "goodbye" to them.

then it talks about how when we are "reborn" or "forgiven" after we repent it's like the slates whipped clean and we're back to the beginning and even though people around you or the people you love might not agree with you, might be lost themselves, or might be telling you that you're not forgiven/there is no God/Christ that you don't have to listen to them, and you don't have to forget what Jesus did for you, and as you remember more and more what he's done before you it'll be before you're eyes that he'll come back if you call him, and there's no need to say goodbye

(you'll come back when they call you-> you= jesus and they=followers)

I know that it might not be what Spektor meant for it, but it's what I take it as, and it's and open ended song, so I'm sure Spektor won't mind if it's what I think of it, as long as I'm not saying that's what she thinks of it. Also, I heard it at the end of Prince Caspien, and I know that Aslan=Jesus and in the movie the song was about the children having faith that they'll be back and they'll see Aslan again.

Over the Rhine – Drunkard's Prayer Lyrics 17 years ago
when I said the bit about to those she knows and her previous self, I meant to say that it would seem she was drowning and forever lost in Him, but for some reason I skipped the middle of my sentence.

Also, she could be compared to a non-beleiever in the "darkness" because she yearns for God so much that she wants to be that desperately caught up in Him.

I believe she's uses the opposite of usual metaphors to describe what she's thinking.

where usually we hear that God/Jesus fill us, she talkes about hour she hungers, and the hunger is deep "on my bones".

she starts out using biblical metaphores "your my hunger, your my wine" and then goes on to say"your my whiskey from time to time" and I think she says 2 things here. One that God/Jesus are more then the few metaphors described in the bible to help us understand them, but once you understand them you see them in other things. For her, like whiskey is a source of comfort and alcohol a lifestyle for a drunk, so is God to her.

The second verse talks about how she yearns for God, and He's the hunger she has, and she's lonely with out Him.

Then she goes on to talk about "Truth" and His "Word"(bible) and how they relate to being intoxicated because your so caught up in it and it effects your mental state, decision making, and is obvious to those around you what's happening to you.

Then of course she shows us that the words she's describing aren't a physical thing, but an internal thing.

Then she goes on to say that she "craves" "movement" in her life, but the movement is His movement, or His influence. She's also saying that right now she's feeling low, and lonely, and hungry for Him.

Then she goes on to say that in the "motion" or in Him, she wants to "down, and be lost not to be found" which this is usually a term we use to describe someone who doesn't know God, but she seeks to know God so much, be so close to him that to those she knows, and even her previous self to "drown" in Him, and be "Lost" in Him.

Then she finishes with the first verse, to emphasize how it's God that fills her thirst, even when the thirst is a desperate one from time to time.
