| They Might Be Giants – Birdhouse in Your Soul Lyrics | 17 years ago |

There's one thing I've considered about the song's meaning, which I don't think I've seen mentioned so far. Perhaps the nightlight, being a blue canary, is meant to represent another 'blue bird' from culture: the bluebird of happiness. The phrase is even referenced in the line "Bluebird of friendliness". That line actually ties up well with governmentproj13's evaluation, above, saying that the "Birdhouse in your Soul" is a symbol of welcoming other people in friendship. Good work on that one, gp13. Anyway. If the blue canary does represent the bluebird of happiness, then where does that leave us with the concept of a birdhouse in the soul, and leaving the nightlight on inside it? Why, what else is a birdhouse for? The invite birds. In this case, the birdhouse is to invite the bluebird of happiness into your soul, and the nightlight to give it a guiding light, no matter how dark the night; to choose to be happy, regardless of how 'dark' the circumstances might appear. Of course, I'm not saying that this is what the song is -supposed- to mean. Like people before me have said, the Johns already confessed that it's just a song about a nightlight shaped like a bird. This is just an interpretation; one of the great things about art is how it can be something different for almost everyone. So, any comments or feedback? |
