| I think Rock Kills Kid lyrics are generally pretty straight forward. This isn't my favorite song but this album as a whole is great | |
| Death Cab for Cutie – Blacking Out the Friction Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Maybe I am translating this a little bit too literally but this is what I thought when i first heard it: "I don't mind the weather I've got scarves and caps and sweaters I've got long johns under slacks for blustery days" He doesn't mind moving and the weather isn't any problem because he is prepared. "I think that it's brainless to assume That making changes to your window's view Will give a new perspective" He thinks it is stupid to think that just changing "your window's view" (where you are: different city, state etc) will change your problems "I don't mind restrictions Or if you're blacking out the friction It's just an escape (It's overrated anyways)" He doesn't mind that she's restricting the truth from coming in, or blacking it out. He knows that it is just an escape from facing the real problem "The hardest part is yet to come When you will cross the country alone" Not really sure about this after reading some of your comments but at first I thought it mean that eventually she will keep moving (running away) and he will eventually stop following her. Then she will be running all over the country in order to escape her problems alone |

| Death Cab for Cutie – Your Heart Is an Empty Room Lyrics | 17 years ago |

so i know you guys have posted interpretations very similar to the one i am about to post, but some things i feel like some of you failed to touch upon (i started skimming the posts around half-way on the second page). "Burn it down Until the embers smoke on the ground And start new when your heart is an empty room With walls of the deepest blue" He wants the relationship to be destroyed or burned down until he has a heart that is empty and ready for something new. "Home's face, how it ages when you're away The spring blooms Then you find the love that's true But you don't know what now to do Because the chase is all you know And she stopped running months ago" He has finally found true love but doesn't know what to do because he is only familiar with the chase and "she stopped running months ago" "And all you see Is where else you could be When you're at home And out on the street Are so many possibilities To not be alone" I think of this verse as while he's in the relationship or with her all he sees is all the possibilities out on the street for one night stands. nights where he won't "be alone" "Flames and smoke Climbed out of every window And disappeared With everything that you held dear But you shed not a single tear For the things that you didn't need Because you knew you were finally free" He destroyed the perfectly good relationship even though he truly loved her. He didn't "shed a single tear" because he was finally free of the relationship. I just feel the man in this song is new to relationship and is only familiar with one night stands or hook-ups. When he finally enters a relationship he has to destroy it even though he truly loves the girl. |

| Death Cab for Cutie – You Can Do Better Than Me Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
This song kind of confuses me. The first two verses I feel like he isn't very happy in this relationship and stays with her just because he is scared of "dying alone". However, the last three verses seem to say the opposite. The third verse seems like he can't control his heart and he fall in love with her every single day. Then he realizes that no one will ever love or see him like she does. She sees him as something worth the time and worth hanging onto. Then the last verse goes back to the unhappy relationship mindset again. Sometimes he wants to leave but he knows that he never would because she can find someone a lot better than him while he knows that he won't be able to "do better than you". |

| Death Cab for Cutie – What Sarah Said Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I read up to page 4 in the comments and then i just skipped to the last page so sorry if i repeat something. usually i stick to reading comments and refrain from posting but i recently looked up the lyrics to this song after listening to it numerous times without even hearing the lyrics. immediately when i read the first verse i thought of my brother. He was in the virginia tech shooting and ended up dying a few hours after arriving at the hospital. luckily my family was able to fly from california all the way down to virginia to spend his last few hours with him. the line "As each descending peak on the LCD/Took you a little farther away from me" is chillingly familiar. i remember thinking i just wanted the machine to stop beeping because with every beep i knew it was one less time his heart would beat. I know people have posted various versions of this, maybe even the exact same analysis but this is just what i think: "And it came to me then That every plan is a tiny prayer to Father Time" He realizes that every single plan he has ever made/will ever make is really just a little prayer. He is praying to Father Time to give me some more time. "As I stared at my shoes in the ICU That reeked of piss and 409" He's in the hospital room that "reeked of piss and 409" "And I rationed my breaths as I said to myself That I'd already taken too much today" He tries to ration his breaths because he feels guilty for taking so many breaths while his friend is laying on the bed counting his last breaths. "As each descending peak on the LCD Took you a little farther away from me Away from me" With each heart beat (peak) he feels as if his friend is slowly using away the heart beats he "has" left. With every beat he is floating closer and closer towards death. "Amongst the vending machines and year-old magazines In a place where we only say goodbye" In the hospital where they only say goodbye. Where families lose love ones to death. "It stung like a violent wind that our memories depend On a faulty camera in our minds" It hurt him to think that all the memories he has ever had with this person is depended on this "camera" which is his mind. The "faulty camera" makes me think that even though we try to memorize and relive every single memory we have with the person, we are bound to forget many of them. "But I knew that you were a truth I would rather lose than to have never lain beside at all" He is glad that he met this person and doesn't regret any of it. "And I looked around at all the eyes on the ground As the TV entertained itself" He looked around at all the people in the room trying to avoid the situation. They look down at the ground while the TV entertains itself (nobody watching it). "'Cause there's no comfort in the waiting room Just nervous paces bracing for bad news" The waiting room is stressful because it is just a place where people brace themselves for bad news. "Then the nurse comes around and everyone lifts their head But I'm thinking of what Sarah said That love is watching someone die" The nurse comes in and everyone stops looking at the ground, maybe to expect good news (?). The singer, however, still looks at the dying patient and realizes that love is being able to watch someone die and not being afraid of death or pulling themselves slowly away when they know someone is dying. "So who's going to watch you die" This is the best line in the whole album. It makes me wonder will anyone ever love me enough that they can stand next to my hospital bed and watch me slowly die? |
