we are all ultimtley and hopelessly alone, we hide this from ourselve by routine and distraction we live in darknes because the light reavels a truth that is to terrible to face that life has no intrinsic purpose and all we have is the dance, the motion, the trappings of exitance |

It occured to me this song may be interpreted in another way, then a simple love song: That is: Dissilusionment with organised christian religeon..the church and all its trappings, off worldlyness, power, hierachys, rituals, persecutions, secrets and materialistic wealth that has strayed so far from the orignal message of humility, humanity, simplicity and unconditional love attributed to jesus's original teachings. It's has no meaning for him, it comes between him and his spirituallity and he wishes nothing more then to be able to worship god in his own way, a way that is personal and has meaning to him. Thats the beauty of U2 lyrics they can mean many things to many people, there never as simple as what they may appear on the surface, and often what seems like mere artistic imagery can have a much richer and deeper signifcance. Whatever the real meaning/meanings it's a beautiful song |

The song was submitted on March 15, 2007, and the album its from relaesed in October 2006..so unless she's Clairvoyance. lines like "Straight shook up beside him With strength he didn't know " does that mean her's high while she's straight watching over him? "At his side and drunk on pride We wait for the blow " Is the blow a physical blow..or a drug reffrence? "B - I would have died too I'd of liked to" and "We put it in writing But who you writing for" is that a refrences to some kind of suicide pact? whatever the meaning it doesnt sound like a healthy relationship to me. stand by your man meets waiting for the man? |

I'm willing to accept I may be tottally off base here but I had always felt this song was about those people to whom everything seems to come naturally and easily while others around them stuggled to accomplish. Without challange they fall by the ways side, never able to to stay with any enterprise because to succed with out effort is ultimatly meaningless. It's every fantastically gifted human being you've ever met who should have had the world at there feet but never fulfiledl there potential because things just came to easilly to have worth. To me thats the irony, notjing worthwhile ever came without effort the harder you strive the more meaningfull the reward, their gift becomes there curse robbing them of the reward of achivment. If im totally wrong let me know cos theres a song in there, it just may tak me a little while to finish it ;) |
