yeah the album version sucks..i think if i had heard it first i would never have liked this song that much. i don't know what the one on his new dvd sounds like, but if you look up david gray lately on youtube a truly amazing live version comes up...its 9 minutes long and has so much climax |

i don't know why you said its fairly easy to understand, and then hardly explain it...
i think its about the past, and how he wishes he could relive his greatest times again with possibly his loved one. but he realized that no matter how you put it (what color you paint it), its in the past. he knows he has to leave the good times behind but at the same time he realizes that they're a part of him and he'll never fully move on |

by "she' i think he's referring to "mother earth" or "mother nature." if you read any of the lines in the song it makes sense. like when he build a tower, or tries to build civilization on top of her, when he comes back, she's stlll welcoming. i could give more examples, but it'd take a while
