I think it's more than that though... I agree that it's about leaving someone, but I think that it kind of centers on how when you've been away for something for a while, or grown old and let memory get to things, you forget all the details about something, and you just remember them for one impression, one singular idea. You don't realize how they have changed, or all of the things that once tied you to them. But if you don't 'paint the words white', if you don't blanche out all of their color, their vigor, their passion- if you don't let the memory fade with age, and you remember all of the details, then they will always be to you what they were when you left them. The same with the hitchhiker and the little girl: He becomes to them what they think of him. |

I love how everyone has a story about this song... it makes everyone think of someone. So relateable. I love YC. |

and the watermelon smile thing--- he can't just live in the dream/ocean. you know how when a kid eats a slice of watermelon, their grin extra-wide and show all the pink stuck in their teeth? and their mouth almost mimics the massive shape of the slice of melon? i think he feels like he can't reach out of youth snd that "watermelon happiness" without getting out of his dream and into real life. |

I think it's how when you're sort of half-asleep it feels like an ocean. I think with the candle swans and everything, it's like he's dreaming of love and a fancy wedding. To me the men with marching drums are like something fueling the dream-ocean... and everyone is moving with time... pushing him forward through the dream and through life. And there are people sending him on his way, wishing him small things that don't really mean anything all with "the same voice" or "jinxed things". and the waves of wooden legs thing is slighty beyond me. maybe it's a reference to the clock-legs from earlier in the song? |
