I agree with this. I've heard someone say it meant the third law of thermodynamics, which talks about how it's impossible to reach absolute zero, and as you approach absolute zero, entropy is reduced. What I thought when I heard it was, "oh yeah, sort of like how our feelings never reach absolute zero!" But that doesn't really fit in with the context of the song, unlike newton's third law of motion. Unless you take action, you won't get a reaction. Or, unless you face this issue straight on, it won't get resolved. thanks, glee! I'm definitely not hearing her say "face to face now". Or "you're stuck now". But I can hear her say "you are" and "with me". |

| and I forgot to mention about the line "drink a bit of wine we both might go tomorrow", the Sufis also say that being in love is like being intoxicated by wine, turning us from the side of reason and intellect (or the side that would say "I'm afraid to die") to the side of love and ecstasy (the side that would say "there is no me and you, only God"). | |

The line "wait in the fire" is a very Sufi idea, which shouldn't be surprising considering Buckley's love of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (according to wikipedia). Rumi, the most famous Islamic mystic, made this summary of his life, "And the result is not more than these three words: I burnt, and burnt, and burnt." The Sufis often say that their love for God is like a fire that cleanses the soul, burning away everything that is not God. And as the Sufi practices fine patience in the midst of this fire, the greater their ecstasy and nearness to God. Also, the miracle of love can't come from the lover, but enters from outside the lover, the lover being completely powerless, hence it's an act of grace that purifies and saves. It's such a beautiful idea put into an incredibly beautiful song. |

I'm sure there are multiple meanings for this song. I think one idea that has been pushed aside too quickly is the idea of porn (something I have a little experience with!), so here's my take She said "i'll throw myself away, They're just photos after all" pretty obvious, a girl saying she's willing to compromise herself to do porn. The idea of throwing herself away seems to pop up a couple of times in the song in different capacities. "I can't make you hang around." the singer is expressing the bad feelings porn creates, especially after watching it. The girl only exists in the pages of a magazine or in a video, but she isn't there after he's satisfied himself and has to go about his life. "I can't wash you off my skin" Goes along with the last line. Not only is he unable to interact with the woman, he also can't forget about her, almost as if pornography is a rash he has to scratch, but just gets worse the more he scratches and satisfies it. "Outside the frame, is what we're leaving out" Someone mentioned that "it can't be about porn because you don't frame porn," but 1) I'm sure some people do, and 2) Josh Homme grew up before the internet was widely used, and if he had experience with porn, probably saw it in magazines, with pictures, which are associated with frames, even if you don't actually put them in a frame and hang them on your wall. Anyway, in terms of the actual lyric, the rest of who the woman is is completely left out, that she's much more than just an object for sex, but that her femininity is something that's "sweet". "You won't remember anyway" There's no human interaction, so it's ok to oggle the girl in the pictures in a manner inappropriate in real life because the girl doesn't know and, as mentioned before, she's throwing herself away anyway. "I can go with the flow" This line is kind of tricky for me. I think it means that he can get into the porn and abandon his morals. I'll come back to this line later. "But don't say it doesn't matter anymore" can't lie to himself that actual love with a real woman "doesn't matter anymore" "Do you believe it in your head?" Can the woman really believe that her sexuality is her only trait, or her most important trait? The trait that defines her? "It's so safe to play along" it's seems so safe to look at porn, as nothing seems to be at stake. "Little soldiers in a row" people come under the control of porn and become like obedient little soldiers. "Falling in and out of love" Going from pornstar to pornstar, you seem to fall in love with one, then quickly go to the next who you become infatuated with, but quickly become bored and move on, quicker than you would in real life. "Falling in and out of love With something sweet to throw away." I think these two lines are closely related. The "something sweet" is obviously a woman's sexuality, and throwing it away is deciding to make it cheap and display for anybody to see. "But I want something good to die for To make it beautiful to live." I think this is the most poignant line in the song, and goes along with the title, "go with the flow." Perhaps by "something good," he means a real woman, not just images, and "to die for" doesn't mean actually dieing, but just something that can be treasured, whose value increases exponentially (like a real woman!). If he has something worth dieing for, it makes life beautiful. He CAN go with the flow and give himself to porn, but he wants something more. "I want a new mistake, lose is more than hesitate." This one's kind of tricky. I think that he's saying he's tired of giving into porn, that he's looking for a new mistake to learn from. It's kind of a weird lyric, though, "lose is more than hesitate." Maybe he means that it's better (more) to lose his addiction than to keep hesitating? That's about it. I also think that the video goes along well with this interpretation. They're driving on the road in the middle of nowhere (a metaphor for being into porn and "going with the flow"), but this inevitably triggers his demons (represented by the clowns in the other car) to pummel towards him at high speed. When he's forced to meet them, they don't just hit and explode, but they become integrated into one another (just like egg/sperm), and at the end, when he gives up porn for the real deal and makes love to the woman on the car, the world erupts in a glorious display of color. He stopped the car, stopped going with the flow, and went for something better. All in all, and awesome song, and goes to QOTSA's credit that there's so many possible interpretations for it. |
