I have to say, my favorite part of this song is

My high school US History teacher was a HUGE JFK fan, and he always hated how nonchalant and colloquial that whole JFK thing sounds. Of course, he's the kind of JFK fan that thinks JFK was like the godsend or something, so....yea....I, however, love the sheer bluntness of that line. Gotta love Billy Joel!! |

Ever since I got this CD, I've been trying to figure this song out. I definitely think that this song is about abuse, be it sexual, physical, or both. I agree with EarlyWakening in the sentiment that I don't think it's about homosexuality. I think the trouble 'howard' has in future years is a result of keeping his abuse as a child under wraps. But anyways, just my opinion. |

Well, ACTUALLY, in response to Juan-PB, I know where you're coming from, because my original thought was that it could be about plural guys too. HOWEVER, after further reviewing my Russian and asking my professor just to double check, I found that to be incorrect. If the word said was in fact malchiky, then the sound at the end of malchik would have to be a long e sound. However, if you listen to the song closely, the next sound/word is definitely a long a, not e. Therefore, it would have to be "malchik gei" because -ei is the only way to make a long a sound in russian that makes sense. So it is definitely "malchik gei" (gay boy), not "malchiky" (boys). |
