The U.S. Navy operated 5 fleet airship wings of dirigibles in the second world war. They were used in anti submarine warfare. They would fly above convoys and spot submarines, many carried depth charges as well. The long flight endurance and a speed that exceeded that of the ships they were protecting and the subs they were engaging made them very effective in this role. Only one ship that was protected by an airship was ever lost to a submarine attack. |

I have always assumed that this song is a reference to the movie Der Himmel Uber Berlin (English title: Wings of Desire) produced by the West German production company Road Movies Filmproduktion in 1987. It is about guardian angles in Berlin in the late 80’s. The central plot revolves around one of the angels falling. |
