Great song. I think its about the old saying that hind sight is 20/20. Most of us can relate to sticking with the wrong person for too long, and not being able to see them for who they really are when we're blinded by love. And how differently we would handle these relationships if we had the experience we do now. You definately regret the people you didn't give a chance when you thought you were with the one. |

Very moving - from a time long before cell phones, skype, internet, email.......
Writing letters and paying out the a$$ for long distance phone calls was the only way to stay in touch. When someone was "far away" they might as well have been on Mars. |

Once a cheater always a cheater. Its about not falling for lies and believing someone has changed. A tiger cant change his stripes. People can try to hide their short comings, but are rarely able to fix them. To me its about not giving someone a second chance to make a fool of you. |

"sock hops" were popular school dances in the 50's. They were held in school gymnasiums, and to keep the floors from getting scuffed up the kids had to take their shoes off and dance in their socks. I think this is just one of the few straight forward parts of the song. |

I've heard that this song is about lying. Lying to the press in particular. Bored with answering the same questions over and over from different interviewers Smith decided just to make up ridiculous answers. Then wrote this song about it..... not sure but it seems to fit |

I heard Darryl Hall interviewed on Howard Stern, what i remember him saying was this: the song was written about a college friend of his who was a privledged son of a record company executive. apparently he totally burnt his brain out on drugs. the original title was going to be "rich boy" but Hall didn't think it sounded right so he changed it to "Rich Girl" |
