Randy Newman – In Germany Before The War Lyrics 17 years ago
This song was apparantly based on the true case of Peter Kurten, a German serial killer who raped and killed many people, including an eight year old girl. It's typical of Newman's gut-punch ability with a twist that a seemingly pretty song about a shopkeeper who likes to sit by the river after work reveals itself as something far more disturbing at the last minute.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – New Morning Lyrics 17 years ago
A very optimistic song with self-expanatory lyrics. Nick Cave sees the arrival of a beautiful new morning as a symbol of brighter things to come in his life.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Slowly Goes the Night Lyrics 17 years ago
I think all the songs off Tender Prey have been copied directly from the lyrics in the inlay book which are often wrong or incomplete on many albums.

As for the song itself, I love it. It sounds to me like both a loving tribute to and a tongue in cheek parody of big, cheesy 70s love ballads. This is especially evident in Nick Cave's hilarious spoken word part at the beginning and the soft-rock "ba ba ba" backing vocals. Cave is proudly showing off his love of these overblown songs while simultaneously acknowledging the ludicrous element which is often what makes them so appealing in the first place.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Watching Alice Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is about Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Alice Through the Looking Glass'. His Alice character was widely believed to be based on Alice Liddell, a young girl who Carroll was friends with and who he is believed to have had a romantic or sexual attraction to. The song seems to be from Carroll's point of view, watching his beloved Alice but knowing that the fact she is a child will keep them apart, hence "Watching Alice dressing in her room, It's so depressing, it's cruel".

For more great music inspired by Lewis Carroll's relationship with Alice Liddell, try Tom Waits' brilliant album 'Alice'.
