i suppose to me this song is about finding someone in a foreign place. i like to take the second stanza literally, in the fact that she does not know how to say anything except for 'hello' and 'thank you very much' (bonjour? merci beaucoup? you never know.) and she is reminiscing about finding this, in the last verses, amid all the phoniness of everything else. she's talking about a diamond in the rough, i guess. and a personalized diamond, one that not other would think of as a 'picnic', or a 'prize'. it's such a beautiful song though. |

alright, so i was in the east village, rightt. and that happens to be where conor oberst lives. and then, i was walking around and like, there was this market called "lime tree market". i immediately thought of this song and freaked out and took a picture. maybe that's where he got the idea for the song title? probably a combination of things, though, too. i agree with what most people have been saying here, that the first verse is about an abortion, the third is about meth or crack [i don't think it's coke because in down in a rabbity hole he's talking about 'painting the foil with the flame' and you do not smoke coke] ad the rest is either about acceptance of death or the surgery being done. |
