Steven talks about this song on a roadrunner website somewhere. He said that the album Signify was all about how people feel a pressure and desire for their life to signify something. With this song, he said as you grow older you start to realize it isn’t so important for it to signify something, as long as what you have done has still been fulfilling etc. That people shouldn’t put so much pressure on themselves to have their life signify something. The reference to Black Dhalia murders is that the victim was trying hard to be famous supposedly, I think an actress and this came at the ultimate cost — her life. Maybe is she hadn’t been striving so hard to make her life be ‘significant’ then she’s still be alive. I think that was the general gist of what he said, I don’t really remember it that well. |

| Having said that, he obviously does know something is wrong, and perhaps this is even why he is thinking of his wife, but I sense he hasnt grasped the idea that he might be dieing, he is kind of hoping if he slows down he will be ok. I dont think there is any real evidence suggesting he doesnt survive the heartattack, however i believe he doesnt. It makes the message have more impact - to cherish the times with loved ones and always try to leave them on good terms, never leave in anger? | |

I agree with XIM for the most part EXCEPT for these points.... Xim said "But instead of sleeping he gets out of his car to try and catch his breath. " I see NO EVIDENCE of this. Motor wheel unwind means he puts his window down to get fresh air, I dont see why anyone would assume he gets out of the car. Also XIM said "We'll grow old together.." he repeats to himself with a tear in his eye as he slowly lies down. His final thoughts. He knows it isn't true." Im not sure he doesnt believe its true. In fact I think he is denial that he is having the heartattack, he even says I will be fine, i just need to lie down, its like he is in denial saying, i'll be right, we will grow old together no worries, but the sad thing is you get the impression this isnt the case. The whole song is him sort of not realising he is having a heartattack, because he is always like, ill be ok, this feeling was pass over, i just need some air, i just need to slow down etc. But the tragic thing is, its likely he doesnt survive the heartattack. Such a beautiful amazing song. |

| I always sort of saw it as the verses being from the mans point of view, and i think he is just telling his lover how he has been hurt before, maybe kinda warning her that his relationships dont last, and then in the chorus its sort of her telling him its alright. I think the guy is over his past lovers, but they have scarred him, he is hesitent to enter this new relationship, and the women, is like relax, its not like i believe in everlasting love so lets just see how it goes? | |

Ive read all your thoughts, but I still come to the conclusion of suicide. NOTHING to do with satan and stuff though. ‘Found a way to rid myself clean of the pain’ – to me a clear reference to suicide ‘never heard me saying good bye never shall i speak to anyone again’ – He wont speak to anyone again because he is about to kill himself. I think he is saying his days have been in darkness – describing his depression leading to the suicide resolution, and through suicide he believes he will rise again I actually think the ‘task’ is the act of suicide. Once he is sure of it and goes through with it, he is free of his pain as he stated earlier and will rise? Who knows for sure though, I wish Akerfeldt would just come on here and let us all know what he meant! Haha. An amazing amazing intro to this song BTW! |

my favourite Opeth song. The last verse makes things a bit interesting though, to me its describing someone burning the place where the photo is so he can like rid it from his memory - cover up what really happened??? Interesting as crime scenes are often set alight to cover up evidence etc? |
