Bright Eyes – Patient Hope in New Snow Lyrics 16 years ago
I want to start off by saying this song pretty much ruled my life for a solid 6 months. Three years later I listened to it and I'm hooked yet again. The same goes for almost any hopelessly amazing Bright Eyes (or do we call him Conor Oberst now?) song. Perfect for an awful, heart wrenching winter day.

"The heat comes in distant shifts to fill up my room, it spills out of these ancient vents to meet the new cold"
I love the opening line because it is the exact feeling you have when you wake up in a cold room in winter. The heater only blows heat a little at a time and it give you no real relief, but rather distinct gusts of warm air, as if in shifts. I also interpret the heat meeting the new cold to be a bit of forshadowing, as he feels the girl in the song is warm and bright when he is dark and cold. But, I could be wrong.

"And I lay in my twisted sheets and stare out at the snow, still thinking of the next few months, my cold and lifeless eyes"
The twisted sheets represnt tossing and turning in his sleep, so it's obvious he's troubled by something happening in his life. Staring at the snow outside of his window and knowing it's not going away for the next several months doesn't seem to phase him as instead of being upset, his eyes are cold and lifeless. It's as if he's so depressed all he can do is stare at the snow realizing it is just as numb and bleak as he feels.

"I've never felt so separate, and then there's you, but that's so obvious"
He's never felt so seperated from his own mind and others, so depressed and despondent. And on top of feeling awful about himself, he knows (to the point of it being obvious to him) that the girl he wants to be with and him have no chance.

"It's hopeless and I know this, that's why I can't dream, no desire or circumstance would keep this from me."
This line is the kicker for me. He's abandoned all hope for being with this girl and he won't even dream about being with her because he feels like it would be pointless, and something he "can't" do. No matter how much he WANTS to be with her or the situations that could occur to give him the slightest hope he feels deep down that it will never happen. Honestly, this line brings me to tears if I've had a bad enough day.

"One by one, to department stores, we walk through the aisles. In a forest of designer clothes, you touch me and smile, and for a moment I could want nothing."
Another line that breaks my heart, but in a more uplifting way. Not only is it insanely poetic, but it's also really sweet. As they're walking through a department store filled with desirable materialistic things, her touch and smile are the only things in the world he would ever want.

"Your bright eyes burn through my exploding heart, and we stand as the shoppers pass us, and for once I can feel a touch complete."
Her warm, joyful presence sees right through his exploding breaking heart without noticing and the people around them seem to have little importance. It's almost as if her touching him makes him feel worse because its more false hope, but she doesn't seem to think anything of it. And for once, instead of feeling completely numb, he feels her touch, and I can only imagine that it was one of those exhilarating touches that make your stomach knot up.

"And I need to just be near you and fill these empty eyes, but you start turning as resistance pulls you from my cold and boring life"
Just being around her makes him feel alive and happy, but as she pulls away from touching him, he feels empty and hopeless again. Resistance pulling her away from his life almost makes it seems like he thinks there's a force keeping them apart and it's all out of his control.

"Let's make this easy and let time pass, as devotion dies, the list goes on and on. I have waited and I will be waiting for the pain to cure the fear"
Instead of living in the moment and trying to make things work, he'd rather just let time pass and let whatever they have die without any attempt to revive it. He's waiting for the pain of his broken heart to dismiss the fear of losing her, but he's still waiting.

I find it a bit ironic how the title "Patient hope in new snow" totally contradicts the lyrics of the song. The title is hopeful and almost optimistic by calling it "new snow." I think perhaps this was on purpose, to say that he does truly have hope in his heart.

Bloc Party – Tulips Lyrics 16 years ago
This song never fails to make me feel girly and sensitive. I interpret it song as someone simply giving a girl flowers-tulips to be exact.

"When you said tulips, I knew that you're mine."
Usually when girls get flowers they look at the flowers and lovingly name the type of flowers they've been given, especially if it's their favorite flower.

"When I caught you there, crying in the night. Wearing my jacket, wearing that smile, I knew that I'd found you."
I'm assuming tulips were her favorite flower, and the fact that he remembered made her cry tears of joy. Obviously she wasn't sad because she was smiling. I also love the "wearing my jacket" bit, because it signifies the early stages of a relationship. Whenever a boy likes a girl, its almost a tradition for him to offer her his jacket if she's cold. I think after realizing that the tulips meant a lot to her, he feels like he finally found her and he knows they now feel the same way about eachother.

"This could be an opportunity."
He feels like if they haven't had a relationship already, that they could possibly have one now, or that they could take the relationship a bit further.

"Were you unawares? Did it catch you out? Or did it break you in, right from the start"
He's curious to know if the flowers caught her off guard or if him giving them to her felt natural right when he gave them to her. I think he was nervous to give them to her and wanted to make sure her reaction was genuine.

"It's as pure as fire, it's as pure as snow. I knew that I'd found you"
His feelings for her are genuinly passionate, and fire symbolizes passion. They're also pure and innocent like snow. Again, he repeats that he feels like he's now gotten her to feel the same way through giving her tulips.

"This could be an opportunity, if you promise to let it grow."
He's letting it be up to her by saying they could have/further their relationship if she will allow the relationship to grow, but he also wants her to promise as some sort of commitment.

"Cuz you're the one I love"
He gave her the flowers because he loves her and wants everything to work out. The word love really makes it clear that he's putting himself out there and the tulips were his way of telling her that.

Grandaddy – Elevate Myself Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is about Jason Lytle not wanting to write songs that he doesn't mean. He just wants to have fun and make himself feel good about his music.

"I don't wanna be a part of all the quality that falls apart these days
I'd rather make an honest sound
And watch it fly around
And then be on my way"

Instead of writing that "hit single," because it's all fake and of bad quality. He just wants to make music he's happy with, enjoy it, and be done. It's simple. It's wonderful.

Kimya Dawson – My Heroes Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is basically about growing up and loosing your innocence. As children, we all have so much faith in our "heroes." Whether those heroes are our parents, musicians, or television characters, we put them on such a high pedestal that we never think they could do anything wrong. As you get older, you see all of the imperfections in people.

The Willowz – I Wonder Lyrics 17 years ago
Nobody's commented this?
This song is about someone who wants to write a clear picture of how he's feeling in a song, but can't quite make it clear enough. He feels stress coming from everywhere, including school and he just wants out and to be set free. I think he did something to someone he really had a thing for and wonders if what they had will still be the same after what he did.

Hard to analyze since it's pretty personal.

Orba Squara – My Favorite Song Lyrics 17 years ago
This is the song for that one friend who always knows what to say in the worst situation, even if what they're saying is complete drabble. ("Hey la da da that’s how you sing along, It ain’t what you say but more how you make it sound, And tell yourself you make it sound so lovely")

Orba Squara – So Comfortable Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is basically about someone who does things that are out of the norm even though they are aware the things they do are unusual to other people. They don't really mind being different because the things they do seem normal to them and they're comfortable with doing those things. I think this song is directed to someone reassuring them that it's okay to be a bit odd ("Make yourself comfortable
And just enjoy it
It’s really wonderful
So why avoid it?")
I really like the "why avoid it" because I think they have a great point. Just because you're unusual doesn't mean you should change or make yourself uncomfortable by conforming. You should just be yourself, it's easier.

She & Him – Black Hole Lyrics 17 years ago
First I'd like to say that this song is a total throw-back to the 50's, early 60's. I say that in the best way possible.

This song is about someone who doesn't feel quite right about their relationship. When they try to mention it, it doesn't quite seem legit, almost like it's not worth it because they have no real reason for complaining ("I guess I'm young but I feel so weary," I've tried to express it, but I think it's all a bore"). They feel alone in the relationship ("I'm alone on a bicycle for two").

Jaymay – Snow White Lyrics 17 years ago
Easily analyzed, this song is simply about a girl hiding a crush, hence "I love you but I'm gonna keep quiet about it, I love you but I'm keepin' my mouth shut about it."
Even though it's a pretty simple song, I believe there's something unique and amazing about this song. Maybe it's the simplicity in itself, or Jaymay's amazing voice, but either way, this song is pure genius.

Meiko – How lucky we are Lyrics 17 years ago
Since anyone has yet to analyze these lyrics, I'll be the first.
Pretty self-explainatory, I suppose. It's about a woman whose optimistic about the future. What I really love about this song is that's its very simple. Its extremely human. Everyone dreams of moving into a new, nice place, spending a weekend at a swanky hotel, but then it goes deeper with a somewhat suble plea for peace. I think it might not fit too well in the song, but that was exactly the intent. Maybe that lifes not all about fanciness, but there are bigger problems to deal with.

Modest Mouse – Little Motel Lyrics 17 years ago
This song depresses me so much, it's ridiculous. Like everyone already said, It's about a couple who are deeply in love with one another but can't be together because their fighting is breaking them apart. They know they need to break it off and sometimes they wish they never even knew each other because they're just going to miss each other so much.
The music and lyrics mesh together beautifully. It almost makes me want to cry. I love this song and Modest Mouse more then words can describe.

Camera Obscura – I Don't Do Crowds Lyrics 17 years ago
I'd like to think of this song as my theme song. The melody makes you feel like your floating on a cloud, while the words are really down to earth.
The verses about the bands are contradictory to the rest of the lyrics. It's saying that there are people out there that will try to help you and probably not judge you like everyone else-like the "crowd."
I think the chorus of this song means that she doesn't really like to be around a lot of people since they all think she's a little out there. But it's almost like she doesn't care. People think shes rude and keeps to herself. She's saying that shes just crazy. She likes a guy (a part of the crowd? another reason for not liking them?) but she thinks he might think shes pretty crazy too so instead of just telling him, she again, keeps to herself. Shes afraid that the guy (or girl) will just sigh and not feel the same so to keep herself from crying, she keeps her hearts secret a secret.
She continues to describe how wanted the guy is and how everyone just loves him, and how he never noticed how much she liked him even when it was obvious.
Umm, i think i got that right.
