Danny Wilson – Mary's Prayer Lyrics 17 years ago
imagine this song being sung by an orphan to a mother that he's never meet that in his mind he's called her Mary to bring her to life and closer to him?

"Being here is heavenly" - is a thank you for the gift of life.

"I made such a big mistake
When I was Mary's Prayer "
- this is the thought that, as Mary's "mistake" - he knows that she is thinking about him... he's in her prayers everyday, hopefully.

"If you want the fruit to fall ...... etc" - references the apple not falling far from the tree and trying to "give the tree a shake" to trace his mother.

"But if you shake the tree too hard,
The bough is gonna break "
- maybe he might not be able to handle what he finds?

And if I can't reach the top of the tree
Mary you can hold me up there
What I wouldn't give to be
When I was Mary's prayer
- maybe he can't trace his real mother? If not, he'd give anything to just be in his mother's thoughts - whether she's passed on or not.

U2 – One Lyrics 17 years ago
For me this song is targeted at an abusive father.

After being brought up in an abusive and love-less household - not feeling protected or safe from the father, who is a seriously flawed individual and the singer now has nothing to do with him or any sibling that sides with him, now that he's an adult and his father is dead - he or she reflects on the thought of the father's ghost coming back to beg forgiveness.

You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on
To what you got
When all you got is hurt

...don't bring children into this world unless you're going to love and protect them.

The Killers – All These Things That I've Done Lyrics 17 years ago
Didn't one of the band's brothers lose a limb and one of the road crew's cousin get killed whilst fighting in Iraq ?

Isn't this song supposed to be in the first person as a cry for help and support for all veterans of soldiers that have returned from hell and can't fit into civilian life...especially with lost limbs?

"When there's nowhere else to run"
[talking in the first person on behalf of the veteran thats lost a limb and has the memories of killing people on the battlefield, Brandon wants to show that the veteran is cornered by his own past]

"I wanna stand up, I wanna let go"
[its about breaking out and telling a story - for a voice to be heard - a voice that's shunned by society]

"I wanna shine on in the hearts of men"
[the naivity of going out to "defend" the realm]

"I want a meaning from the back of my broken hand"
[trying to make sense of life after their experience of killing others...possibly innocent civilians...including young children]

"so much older than I can take"
[Brandon (putting himself in the first person as the band member's brother) talks about how war has made a young soldier old before his time]

"Help me out"
[he just wants a break - someone to help him e.g. a job, some dignity]

"The GOLD-hearted boy I used to be"
[alludes to simple life before entering the battlefield]

"Yeah, oh don't you put me on the backburner"
[akin to asking 'hey where's the marching bands on my return from war' - 'I've gone through a lot for my country and where's the gratitude and support?]

You're gonna bring yourself down
[reflecting on society, and how by shunning the veterans, its a sad reflection on themselves]

Over and out, last call for sin
While everyone's lost, the battle is won
With all these things that I've done
All these things that I've done
(Time, truth and hearts)
If you can hold on
If you can hold on

[refers to redemption for what's happened and holding on to one's own sense of pride, dignity and self after a traumatic experience - this is not a call to arms - its a cry for help...and understanding for young guys who need society to know what they went through and Despite, no longer being a soldier - they are still human beings]

.......I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
