| Pink – Ave Mary A Lyrics

I agree with xLadYofSorrowZx. I think it's about a crisis of faith. The ending of her marriage, all these other examples of problems in the world (school shootings, war, terrorism), cause her to consider the possibility that God has abandoned us. She's praying to Mary to return her faith ("I need you to tell me/Child be still"). That's my take on it. And how I feel a lot of the time. My fave song on "Funhouse".

I think it's her struggling with her drinking to escape after the divorce. It's the eternal questions "What is enough?" and "What is too much?" And what is with the opening chords sounding a bit like "Heart-Shaped Box" by Nirvana? Am I the only one who hears that? Maybe I'm just crazy... |

I think she's simply asking herself "How can I feel this good when I'm sober?" Because most of us probably know the good feeling of being drunk before the crash and depression comes along. Drinking is an easy (and legal for 21+) high. I just heard this song tonight, and I can relate to it so much. |

I agree that the song is about missing a former love. And as HighOnSunday51 (great name and song, btw) said, it's about carrying or holding a torch for him, which means longing and loving someone who doesn't feel the same way about you. And "I never dreamed I'd lay down my torch for you like this" means that she never thought that she would stop longing for him and loving him. Like several songs on Flavors of Entanglement, this is probably about Ryan Reynolds. |

| KT Tunstall – Other Side Of The World Lyrics

I'm a big fan of songs having different interpretations for different people. I think the end of a relationship interpretation is probably the one that KT was going for. But this song always makes me think of someone who is considering suicide. The first verse is indicating that she's "waiting like an iceberg" to change. To become happy and want to live. But she can't wait any longer. She's "cold inside" and "wants to be like the water". She wants to die. The "fire fades away" bit, I think is referring to her will to live waning, and she can't think of anymore "tired excuses" to stay living anymore. She "wishes it were simple" and knows that if she commits suicide, she's "giving up easily". I think she might be speaking to someone who loves her and is trying to convince her not to end her life. "You're close enough to see that/You're the other side of the World to me". She feels that she is already dead, and her friend (or whoever) can't understand how she feels because s/he is alive. The verse "Can you help me?/Can you let me go?/And can you still love me when/You can't see me anymore?" I think is her trying to reason with this person that this is something she feels she has to do, and she's sorry, but that's just the way it is. Like I said, it fits the ending of a relationship better, but I think this is also a valid interpretation. Or it might just be me being crazy. Who knows? |

| Alanis Morissette – Hands Clean Lyrics

The meaning is basically what everyone else has said. When Alanis was 14 she was having an affair with a man about 15 or 20 years her senior. The verses are spoken thru the man, and the chorus is Alanis. I'm not too certain of her early recording career (pre-JLP) but some of the lyrics make me wonder if it's her manager or someone else who was professionally involved with her. Especially the lines "If it weren't for me, you wouldn't have been successful" and "You're essentially an employee, and I like you having to depend on me." But it's Alanis, so who knows? She's quite enigmatic with her music, which causes it to relate to so many people in so many different circumstances. |

| Pink – Long Way To Happy Lyrics

I agree that this song is about rape. Whether it resulted in pregnancy, I am not sure but don't think so. The first verse refers to her being in denial and then finally admitting it to herself, if nobody else (One night to you/lasted six weeks to me). The bitter little pill might either be a sleeping pill, or some other prescription pill like a tranquilizer that she needs just to remain calm. The part about her innocence being gone doesn't necessarily mean she was a virgin, but the later line about "it not hurting to lose it" indicates that. The part about hesitation is about her not being able to trust people anymore, and the line about love goes with that too. The second verse might be describing the actual event, but I'm not sure. The third, where she "thanks" him, is obviously sarcastic and doesn't need explained. I relate to this song so much. I am a rape survivor, and this song reminds me so much of what I went thru afterwards. Especially the parts about not trusting people and feeling that you aren't able to love anyone. It is a long road to happy after a rape, and I love P!nk for writing this song, whether it is autobiographical or not. |

The meaning is obvious. And as Kipsy-Koopa said, it is boastful and narcissistic, but she just got divorced. She's hurt and pissed and thinking about how to get HERself back together. And yes, it is a great song and quite catchy. I love it. |

I agree with middleclasstool. I think the "and his fingers are getting itchy now" is referring to him getting trigger happy. It's a great song though. I love the guy's voice throughout this song. |

This is my song right now. I'm kind of dating a guy who is unsure of his sexuality. One minute he's right there with me and he likes me, and other moments he just is completely lost. "...I will do such things to ease your pain/Free your mind and you won't be ashamed..." That says it all for me. |

| Nellie McKay – Ding Dong Lyrics

First of all, I think it's brilliant that McKay mixes happy, cheery music with depressing lyrics referencing insanity, promiscuity, and suicide. I think the first part is about how she thinks she is going crazy, and maybe she is right. I think the cat is literal, in the sense that her cat was the only thing she had in the world (she felt) and losing it made her come unhinged. Most of the verses are self-explanatory. "Talk for hours and never stop..." might refer to a therapist or someone she is working with to work thru her inner turmoil. Man in White is obviously a reference to a psychiatric ward or asylum. I think the "this man of letters..." indicates a psychiatrist who diagnosed her with different mental illnesses, for example bi-polar (BD) or borderline personality disorder (BPD). I think the second verse still ties into the insanity part, where she is losing touch with reality. The man in red is a lover, or a slew of lovers who all blend together to her as she uses sex to deal with her pain and emptiness. The third verse is obviously as she contemplates suicide, and then the final with the man in black is Death or the Grim Reaper as she commits the deed. The "as you drift off in the tide/maybe this jack the ripper lied/and you died." line is about how she thought that suicide would be the end of all her problems. But really she's just dead. No problems, but no good either. This is just my take... |

Uh, this is my life. Not much else to say. It's obvious he feels his life is pointless and he can't bear to live for nothing. I've been there myself. I especially like the line "want to do something rash and symbolic, impale myself on love..." |

How has no one commented on this song? It's awesome. Basically the theme song to my life right here. I first heard it on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and I pursued adding to it my music library until I found it. Especially love "The outside me is ahead by three/And I don't think I'm awful, you?/The inside me is ashamed to be/And I don't know what to do..." That could sum up my whole life in those four lines... |

| Natalie Imbruglia – Come September Lyrics

I might just be crazy, but this song has always reminded me of someone with a terminal illness. Like cancer. Let me explain: "Her bones will ache/Her mouth will shake" could be the physical symptoms of the illness or maybe chemo. "And as the passion dies/Her magic heart will break" Her passion for life is slowly draining away. "She’ll fly to France/‘Cause there’s no chance..." Doesn't France have some of the latest cancer treatments? I'm not sure about the "Her violet sky..." verse unless it's simply that she must accept what she has. "The souls that burn/Will twist and turn/And find you in the dark/No matter where you run" could refer that no matter what you do, you aren't going to get better. "She’s made her mark/But lost her spark/And what she’s pushing for/She can’t remember" could be about how something she's started in her life is unfinished. "She will run/She’s gonna drink the sun/Shining just for you/Instead of everyone/And so it goes/She’ll stand alone/And try not to remember/Come September" I think this is referring to when she passes on. I think the "Everything wrong/Gonna be alright/Come September" might refer to the amount of time she's been told she has. All the pain, the sadness, it's will all be gone Come September. I'm probably totally off base and reading too deep into this, but my aunt died of cancer and this song reminds me of the stuff that she went through. I can see the love/relationship angle as well. I do believe that songs should be interpreted on a personal level, and this is just my take. Food for thought. |
