I agree with EmbracingMediocrity, I think that the verses refer different parts of a person life, it starts when she's young and the last one when she's an old woman, and as mary_jo said it, the white horses expression it may mean death but in a not dark way, so the last line: all the white horses, it could mean her own death. Just a thought.
When I listen to this song I always imagine a story.
Beautiful song, by the way.

This song isn't as deep as people may think. The title is just hard for some people to understand. It's about his flute teacher's daughter.

--

The "deep" thing. why you say that?
The point here is the meaning YOU get about a song, maybe you're right and this song in particular it's just about that what you say. BUT...
My point is: Music is art cause the public can get different visions about the piece of art, according to Umberto Eco in "Obra Abierta" (I don't know the name in English).
AGAIN: Now-a-days a piece of art is considered those ones which can be interpreted in many ways, even if the author wanted to give to it just one meaning, why is that? because each human being has a different vision because of culture and a space/time context, so depending on that, people get so many different ways to get to a meaning. that's the fantastic thing about us!

I really enjoy share my point of view, and read what other people say, because there are things that are so different, but not wrong, it all depends in the way you're looking at it.

sorry if I "sound" repetitive. it's all I can do to express myself in english :P

well, I have a problem with the song's meanings because of the language (I'm argentinian), I have the enough knowledge to speak and write (I think, hahaha) but there are things that I miss 'cause I don't know the expressions and interpretations, etc, u know?
Before I knew about the flute teacher; I've got a (not totally) different vision of the song.
In the song I got the pain and suffer about someone he coudn't get, but I felt at the end of the song that that someone was gone, I mean, dead, 'cause in the singing he transmits much more pain that just missing someone, it goes further than that, someone gets what I mean??
well that's all, hehe. just wanted to say it.
